312mm upgrade BRAKE PAD question

Hi all

I've searched high and low for an answer to this question but haven't found one yet, so I'm calling on your knowledge please. First some background...

After suffering with brake judder on my Mk1 tdi FR, something which as I've been searching for an answer, seems to be a highly common problem on the Leon's for some reason, I opted to upgrade to the 312mm discs and carriers. Over 12 months and several hundreds of pounds later I'm still suffering the same problem...and it's now worse than ever.

The current garage I've got looking at it has found a few small problems like flexy hoses which need replacing and a seized rear caliper but they are more concerned about the front pads not covering the full surface of the disc and the fact that there appears to be scoring on the disc from the edge of the pad. Having read numerous threads on here and elsewhere I know that the TT which uses the 312mm setup shares the same calipers as the 288mm setup on the Leon.

The question; Does the pad used on the Audi TT have a larger surface area than the Leon versions, despite sharing the same caliper? Does anyone have VAG parts software that could confirm this for me either way please?

I'm hoping that once I've had new calipers, discs, pads (pending an answer to the above!) and flexy hoses fitted, the problem will finally disappear...not confident though.

I belive that the 312 and 288 share the same pads as mine have been fine and I've changed the rears to 256 tt brakes and they share the same pads hope this helps

Thanks for confirming this. I have a feeling the problem is nothing to do with the brakes but instead could be a result of worn or bent ball joints. They've never been changed as far as I can work out from receipts and I'm up to nearly 90k miles now. The coilovers I had fitted for a short period of time might have helped knacker them too.

Just wish that a garage could tell me if this is the problem before I go and blow a load more money on parts that'll probably make no difference whatsoever :(
