225/45/r17 tyres???

Hi guys/Girls

My tyres are going to need changing soon and are currently 205/40/r17 off a seat ibiza cupra tdi 2005.

I just want to know how far you can go before you will hit a problem in upgrading the tyres.

I want to put 225/45/r17 on it, Ive been told by a big tyre dealer it is possible but it will just mean when I am doing 60mph normally I will actually be doing just under 64mph.

He just mentioned that they would have to fit flush with the original 17" cupra alloys and mentioned the arches as well.

Does anyone if this is possible or not as I don't want to waste a load of money buying them then find out there no good.

Cheers for any help you have!

cheers guys.
s3tony you seem to know a bit about tyres! can you tell me the maximum I can go to then, would it be 215/45/r17? or is that still to wide.

Thanks again

they still come in at 4.72% difference,
3% is just a figure they advise due to accuracy of the speedo. they will physicaly fit. if you keep the profile at 40 instead of changing to 45 it keeps the figure down 215/40/17 is 1.35% and 225/40/17 is 2.62%

just have a play on a tyre calculator i got the figures from this website but theres loads out there...

as for rubbing issues i wouldnt have a clue im afraid. i couldnt see the 215 having a problem, its only 10mm wider, so 5 mm closer on each side.

thanks very much for your help.
I purely want them for there appearance, just like the more chunky tyre, it just looks more pleasant on the eye.

I have found some 215/40/r15 that might be ok so thanks again mate

Yeah they do look funny but i guess that due to the 45 wall height isn't it?
If i stay with 40 and just go for 215 width It shouldn't look any diff apart from being that bit wider.

Thanks for the pics I've wanted to see what they would look like for some time.

215/40s are definately the best tyre to go for, they give a bit more rim protection than the 205s, however they do cost slightly more.
225/45s are completely wrong for this chassis, plus they look silly and will mess up your insurance.
