Hi all,

Been a lot of recent discussion with regards to Mk3 20VT exhausts on the Mk2.

Thought I'd take the opportunity to show off my handy work! I've had the rear box fitted for over a year now using a custom made stainless steel reducer (Now for sale!) to the original 8v centre box. But I've just now replaced the 8v centre section (after 10 years service!) with a new genuine SEAT mk3 20VT centre. Perfect fit and straightforward swap as the centre box has the the same diameter as the CAT.

Iam quite pleased with it! - GREAT sound!

sort of like a turbo burble without the whistle - tis good huh :)

straight fit on the 16v btw - had one for 3/4 years - should change it and decat i reckon

Here's a tip!

When removing the old rear silencer I did it by unbolting the 2 mounting brackets from the car and leaving them and the rubbers attached to the silencer - remember to support the weight of the old silencer first though!
Its far easier to then remove these and switch them over to the 20VT silencer away from the car.

I used washers as spacers under both the mounting brackets and consequentially longer bolts to lower the silencer so that the tail pipes sat 6mm approx. below the rear vallance. It takes a bit of experimenting to get it right but in over a year of being fitted it hasn't damaged either the tail pipes or the plastic valance. This may be an issue if the suspension is lowered as this will further reduce the clearance of the exhaust pipe over the rear suspension beam causing nocking.

Worth noting for cutting that from the factory the Cat back system is one piece but the point of joining on genuine SEAT replacement silencers for the 8v and 20vt appears to be the same

i found rather than lowering it as it's so close i trimmed a curve out the standard bumper about 10-20mm just to save it melting

Yeah you could do this but I didn't want to do anything that couldn't reversed - which in that case would mean a complete new bumper and painting! As I said I've had NO evidence of melting at all!

ok, how much welding was invloded in getting the 20vt silencer on? if any? keeping in mind that mines a 1.4.....

ill have to see what issues i have when fitting mine, but i think i will have to re-trim the exhaust curve slightly wider to house the twin pipe...


now I just need to find someone selling a decent mk3 cupra backbox for a decent price!! :p

Ive got mine sitting under the bumper, without cutting of the plastic valance and without dropping the exhaust. Its touching the valance but there isnt any melting or anything, think I may cut a small bit from the valance.

Good video and guide mate, I agree, the exhaust does give off a great sound. I love the sound of it on my 1.4. I also have the 20v T centre section on aswell.

Not much/if any welding. Depends how much of the system you get. If you get it from cat back then it goes straight on, just a reducer to connect it to the cat. If you just go for the backbox then you will have to do the same to connect it to your centre section.

to a 1.4 you'll need a reducer pipe with a bit lopped off to compensate for it

55.5mm outer if i remember rightly but make it as short as possible and plan to fit just after cat probably easiest place

Keep looking for a second hand system to pop up locally, my back box is goosed so seems like a nice upgrade. Problem I might have is the exhaust cut out in my bumper........or it could fit perfect.

Don't know. I bought mine off a Cupra R owner on here in Spring or Summer 2002/3. From memory it had next to no miles on it as it was almost immediately replaced by a Jetex system. Had it fitted same time as my Neuspeed ARBs at the old Autotechnik nr Southampton (still remember being stopped by the police going down the M3!). Sold my car last year with the exhaust still going strong but from memory with 100k at least on it.

Mine was quite noisy, apparently quite literally headache inducing on a long fast journey from Surrey to Cornwall on a hot summer evening! Never bothered me that much as spent most of my car time in the Ibiza.

I like noisy (im not a chav) and dont mind it my dads got a 200sx with straight through exhaust and that is unbelivebly loud and i love it :D

Never seen exhaust clamps like these, can you shed abit of light bud?

They are genuine VAG/SEAT clamps listed for the 20vt system and bought from my local SEAT dealer for about £10 ea. IIRC. As the 20vt pipe diameter is the same from the CAT back and identical to my original 8v CAT it just needs x2.

They are very robust, clamp over a large even area and the two large bolts are easy to torque upto the required 40nm. I used exhaust assembly paste to aid the seal.

The old original one on the left in the picture has been attacked with a pipe cutter in an attempt to remove it otherwise its the pretty much same as the new.

hi just got my mk3 20v exshaust del and was woundering if any1 new the od of the 1.4 cat lol so i can have a reducer made up??
