2014 FR TDi ST electrical problem (my fault - I've blown something.....)

Hi,
I've been a muppet and blown something / things up, can any one suggest anything to help (fix the car....) please.
I wanted to put an inverter in the front passenger footwell so I could charge ebike batteries whilst I was driving. I saw there are decent size (10mm square I think) red and black cables to fuse box C behind the glove box so broke into these and connected to the inverter. It didn't work - there was 12V at the positive cable but the negative did not seem to have a circuit back to the battery negative / chassis ground.
So I tried bridging the negative terminal on the inverter direct to chassis earth / the battery negative terminal but unfortunately I still had the inverter connected to the fuse box C black cable. when I connected the inverter negative to the battery there were bigger sparks than normal although the inverter worked. When I disconnected the inverter negative from the battery terminal the inverter still worked but at 7V not 12V (previously it had not worked at all).
Now I have all sorts of issues:
no instrument lights at all
the engine won't crank (it did a couple of times but quickly stops)
LH tail lights not working
door windows not working
no interior lights
there may be others I am not aware of.
The alarm went off at one point and now component protection is enabled (on the ICE) and wont clear.
The car locks and unlocks from the key as normal.
I've checked fuses and swapped relays but no evident difference

I have used Autel diagnostic and there are the following codes reappearing when I clear them:
ENGINE
U015500 - lost comms with instruments
U042800 - invalid data from steering angle sensor

ABS
B116816 - steering angle sensor voltage low
U112100 - databus missing message

HVAC
U112100 - databus missing message

AIRBAGS
U112100 - databus missing message
U110100 - component protection active

CAN GATEWAY
U015500 - lost comms with instruments
U020000 - lost comms with door control module B

PARK ASSIST
U112300 - Databus error value received

CENT ELECT
U112100 - databus missing message

Anyone got any ideas what I have damaged please?

Seriously?

Ooops 😰
Sounds like you may have an issue with the Body Control Module.
You're probably going to have to get a sparky specialist to sort it.

Sorry, couldn't resist

No idea about your electrical problems, but it sounds like you've done a proper job of it!

I definitely ride an ebike because it lets me do this at least twice whilst you real bikers are sweating and groaning your way back up the hill - the way I look at it is that I am just a lot better at having fun than you are :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

anyway, does anyone know if the BCM needs to be programmed to the car or can I just get one (correct part number) and fit it and it will work please?

should have mentioned I ride bikes for fun not to impress giggly little girls.

Fixed the car: there is a power bus bar across the front of the engine bay fuse box - the various main power cables all bolt to this - each of the connections has a fused link built into it (you can't see them they are behind a plastic strip). one of these (80A) had blown. couldn't get a replacement bus bar 'til Friday so cut the plastic back locally and trimmed and soldered two 40A blade fuses in parallel across the blown fuse. Cleared all the codes and to my huge relief it all works correctly now.

Lucky man. Now stop fiddling with it and get out on that bike a bit more.

I was out at the weekend (human powered) but it was pure filth. My mate on his e-bike had no issues with the mud but did destroy his rear mech!

will do when I get the time - off to Pembroke kayaking and messing about this weekend.
I have a Canyon Strive as well so I do human powered too just not very often!

I have a red ST FR 184 TDi too, really like it - panoramic roof, B6 dampers and a golf PP rear roll bar, was thinking of chipping it, what chip did you get?

I never used to be a fan of e-bikes, but I now see a really good use for them. I'll eventually need one.

Tuning chip is this from thses guys:

If you have the money, a remap is arguably better but everyone has their own opinion. Mine cost £100 2nd hand so was a no-brainer.

I do like the red ones! Don't have any posh additions though. Do you find the upgrades help? I don't drive the car that hard and quite happy with it in stock format.

ebikes are a lot of fun, most people I ride with have bought one once they've tried one.... still hard work but you just go further and have a lot more fun especially if you have spare batteries which I do.
My rear dampers were leaking so I fitted B6 dampers all round, they are nice - not at all harsh with standard springs and decent body control although I feel they lack rebound control in choppy undulating stuff.
The rear bar is quite a lot stiffer than the original but still soft compared to the front so it's a subtle change but the car is a bit better balanced with it.

Glad you got the car sorted!
Ha sorry but e-bikes aren't more fun, in my experience! Being a level 2 qualified MTB instructor with over 20 years of experience, I've ridden a lot of bikes, including many e-bikes (my own dad has one).
Very regularly, I ride distances and terrains where an e-bike would conk out before the end of my ride. And carrying a 4kg battery in a backpack sounds neither fun nor safe on technical terrain.
I will stick with my Santa Cruz Bronson and proper pedal power for many more years yet!

Next time bring it to a proper electrical garage to do it. The price to have it installed correctly versus blowing the A** out of the car will seem like nothing.

Fortunately this time you only blew an 80A fuse, lucky it wasn’t anything CAN/ECU related. Glad you got it fixed
