2011 - Misfire Cy2, Emissions, EPC on idle, limp mode

Hi,

I've been lurking this forum for a few months and have only today decided to create an account. I have a long-term issue with my Seat Ibiza 2011 (my first car, semi-auto, petrol) and long-term being that there hasn't been much headway in solutions except two weeks ago...

Anyway, I purchased a Seat Ibiza in Feb 2015, with about 34k miles on the clock. Im now just shy of 39k miles as I don't need it to commute to work (but partly due to the vehicle being out of action quite often).

My recent understanding with the SEAT dealership is that they found misfires on Cyl 2 + 4 and I had two new seal kits and injectors fitted, which solved Cyl 4 but not 2. Apparently Cyl 2 compression is low. Car went in with EPC and Emissions lights on with restricted revs / limp mode. Dealership wanted to take engine/head off which I authorised but then didn't - and said that they used a camera and the engine is damaged and want to fit a new engine for ~£4k+. Does this sound like it would be the solution?

The car passed its MOT earlier this year as the EPC light would come on once every month or so. It was only Jan/Feb this year when Emissions and EPC both came and stayed on. I have done oil checks (and im not very car savvy - sorry!) but I have also read about the throttle body or faulty brake sensors in some issues similar to this?

Edit ; trying to summarise this.

TLDR; misfire cyl2+4, seal kits replaced, misfire cyl2 and cyl disabling. ECU on idle after 30 secs. Emissions light on.

I have the 1.2 but have had the spark plugs changed twice in a year.

Hi Guys we have a seat ibiza 1.2 tsi turbo petrol done 90,0000 miles which now has an annoying stutter on acceleration and does not reveal any error codes its had spark plugs coil pack and new leads any clues would be a great help

Hi, no disrespect but by your own admission you're not car savvy and what you have said about this car does not sound good. Can I summarise for clarity for all. Your car EPC light is on (on it's own may not be a big deal but ....) The car's power is reduced, a common occurrence that the car's ECU will command the engine to do ( Known as, limp home mode) The car's injector(s) and seal's were replaced on cylinders 2 and 4 (guess we were talking serious money) Now we find there is a compression/problem on cylinder 2; this is serious and can be caused in cars using the wrong oil, which can cause internal parts to stick and there maybe many other reasons such as a broken spring, cylinder engine wear, (maybe down to lack of oil or not regular changes in the past) or a broken piston ring.
So what are you left with a garage who wants £4000 to fit a new engine. Your options 1) Buy a secondhand engine from an auction site and have it fitted maybe for £1300 but you maybe fitting an engine as good as yours? 2) find a mechanic who is happy and willing to repair yours, I would suggest this would mean him removing the engine from your car and getting it to an engine reconditioners. There are many unknowns here firstly some modern engines cannot be reconditioned as such rather a new block is purchased and the good parts of your old block are removed and put on the new. This is more labour intensive and hence costs increase. On the other hand the old block maybe able to be rebored and saved from the scrap man and needless to say this saves your pocket too £££. However the bottom line is without the mechanic looking at it the cost of repair is near impossible to calculate though it maybe £1500+
I guess these eye watering figures comes down to what you honestly think the cars value is, and then you take it from there. Personally a 2010 Ibiza with an engine replacement of £4000 would it be worth it .... is debatable. Though you know more about you model, engine size, trim level fuel type etc. than you have give on this forum. I hope this helps in your next move

Wouldn't pay 4k, 8yr old Ibiza isnt worth 4k

If you have been to a dealership, go to a reputable independent garage near you but dont tell them what the dealer has told you. This way the independent garage will do their own summary

My friend took his to a dealership and they said he needed a new acuator because his boost wasnt right, he took it to an independent garage and they found it was a broken wire and got it repaired for less than a 1/5 of the price the dealership would have done it at

Hi Guys my message is first of all to "Pew" my post goes back to the original querry and isn't to say what I would do in such a "dilemma" I would agree that spending 4K on a car that's 8 years old is questions unless it was a Porsch or a very loyal Volvo fan. You may also forget to mention how many £££ have been put into the car recently and how reliable the car was upto the current issue. If for example, to put the current fault right was only a couple of £1000, maybe better the devil you know is a safer option, than to spend a couple of £1000 on the second hand market.

Advice please: went to view an 2014 Ibiza 1.4, all seemed fine on drive, then started shaking, misfiring, when at standstill the epc light then came on, on inspection under the bonnet the oil cap was missing. the owner has taken back to garage and said it was the missing cap that had caused the issues, and its been resolved.Does this sound reassuring enough to purchase this car? Thank you.

I wonder why/how/when the oil cap disappeared, I would have though that running a petrol engine with the oil cap missing would cause it to run a bit rough a bit rough and you would have noticed that while driving or at least when it was idling, though maybe the oil cap was just placed on top of the filler point and it bounced off while you were driving it, very strange.
