Most likely to be a coil pack or two. Although if one goes it doesnt normally mean the car will stall.
If one of these failed it would result in the engine running on 3 cylinders and the engine light flashing.
Its a common
problem, but an easy fix.
Plenty of info on here. but in short:
The 1.8T engine has a coil pack for each cylinder, (the bits that are fitted to the spark plugs).
To find out which one it is you could unplug one and see if the engine runs worse. If there is no change then thats the faulty one.
Or get someone to run vagcom on it to identify. Or a dealer, who will bend you over and charge loads for 2 mins work.
Coil packs are £25-£32 each.
Seat extended the original warranty on these to 5 years due to the number failing. seems you miss out on this. But then they made it a PITA to claim anyway.
Many people have replaced them all when one goes as it may mean the others are on their last legs...
cylinders 1 and 2 can be accessed by simply taking off the engine cover, cylinders 3 and 4 need an allen key and 10mm spanner to acess them.
To change, simply unplug the electrical connector, then using a flat head screw driver lever the coil pack up verticlaly off the spark plug.
