2001 Cordoba Vario newbie with questions

Hi all

This is an excellent forum with a lot more Vario owners than I'd expected to see. I hardly see another Vario on the roads let alone online :D

Anyway now I've found a home among other SEAT owners I thought I'd see if anyone has answers to a few questions I think are trivial but would like help on.

Few figures, I drive like a priest on Sunday most days, mostly motorways at 60mph and get roughly 60mpg, or 50 if I'm in a hurry ;)

Firstly my exact model of Cordoba Vario is a bit of a mystery. It was registered in Ireland in 2001 before being brought over and sold in the UK by Arnold Clark. It's badged a Vario 1.9 SDi and has a 1.9 Diesel engine. I can't see any SDi's listed for UK release so have no idea what type of output i.e bhp/torque or mpg figures are standard. The log book says it's an AQM engine code if that means anything. Only references I can fing on SDi is on the Polo Variant models and something like 68bhp? I have no idea if it's one and the same engine though.

Secondly, and still on Polo Variant, the previous owner was a dog lover and had got rid off the rear luggage cover, retractable I think. I've looked at various online parts websites looking for one but after a month have had no luck. And have had less than no chance finding one in a breakers yard. I have seen more Polo estates advertised so I was wondering if the these or the Fabia equivalent all had the same fittings and the luggage covers were interchangeable? Failing that has anyone found a budgest price i.e cheaper than chips website or source that sells oddities like this. SEAT themselves said brand new price was £245.00 before VAT, but SEAT Spain had none in stock anyways

Thirdly is the factory fit radio. The handbook only tells me it's a SEAT Sound System II, nothing more. It's a cassette by the way. I have a Sony CDX-616 knocking around in working order and is compatible using the correct CD Interface but I don't know if my radio is pre-wired or not. I took it out while replaceing the hear-control unit. It has no model name on the case only a couple of stickers with various numbers, best pic I can get is on the link below

http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/4214/pict0118gt3.jpg

Also the link below shows the 3 connectors that go into the back of the unit. The top yellow, green and blue are all together in one block. The blue block isn't blank, it has connections in it which might tell which it is. I've also taken the glovebox out to see if the wires go anywhere i.e pre-wired, but go lost as soon as I took it out.

If anyone has experienced the same problems can you give an idea of cost for the CD Changer Interface and best place to find one?

Think the last thing I can think to ask is why there are no Technical manuals, Haynes or otherwise, available? Is this to make sure people like me go to a garage because I have no idea] what I'm doing, or so I have to go to a garage to fix what I've done wrong because I don't know what I'm doing LOL

If your still awake after reading that, well done. And huge thanks in advance for anyone who can help out/explain any of my questions.

And much respect to the modding threads I've read on here. The green lowered Vario looks a lot smarter than the VW's and Audis it's pictured with. The Yellow work in progress Vario is also very good looking, can't wait to see more pics of the MK3 bumper. And last but not least to M0rk for his threads on his and other Varios. Like the open-air project with your cordy, I never argue with a man that can weild an angle grinder like that! :)

Cheers

Hey M0rk

Cheers for the quick reply.

I'll give a look at the Ibiza guide, just thought it would have been less of a mess trying to fit the CD Changer I had.

So the change was realy just cosmetic on the Mk3 Vario then if the Mk2 book covers most mechanics.

Sorry to hear your parting company with your Vario though. I'll stick my brass neck out here and ask if the luggage cover is leaving with it?

Yup, the shells are near as makes no difference the same - it was just a facelift really.

I'm afraid the luggage cover went with it

Ah well, you don't get an answer if you don't ask a question. The search goes on lol

I had looked at a 1.6 T plate vario before the 2001 and only got the SDi because the 1.6 got sold. But it all did seem the same, even the back end, with only the front lights, grill and bonnet looking different. I'll nip down the local car part shop and look at the Mk2 Ibiza and Cordoba books to see if either of them cover my specific engine.

Thanks again

Yo, welcome.

My polo variant has the same engine as your Vario. The polos and cordys are the same in every way basically bar the grille surround and grille, and badging. I buy parts listed as cordoba parts for mine, they are the same. My polo was built in spain and instead of having a vw logo stamped on all the parts it has a seat logo.

**** one on the load cover, mine came with one and it is awesome to have. A polo one should be fine i imagine. Take a pic of your boot and ill confirm that its the same if you want.

There is a haynes manual available. It covers your engine.

As for the stereo, i just bought a blaupunkt queens mp56 and as well as the normal iso plugs on the back, it has another socket as well where you can use those yellow/blue/green ones. Never heard of that before i got this headunit the other day. No headunit ive ever had has had that before. Or car for that matter. My polo had normal connections. Anyway, thats probably no help to ya cos your head unit doesnt have it so sorry.

Pics of the car!!!

Hey guys

Sorry it's been a while since I last visited these parts but real life's been complicated to say the least!

Back to Cordoba matters though and I'm looking for advice from experienced Vario/ Polo Variant owners.

After giving up on finding a load cover for my Vario I've started looking further afield to Germany and have found one for a Polo Variant but not knowing anyone with a Vario or a Variant with load cover I can't tell if they are one and the same.

Here is a pic of the part.

It's a lot of money to be sending to Germany, especially having no experience of the seller, but if it will do the job I don't mind paying for it.

What I need to be 100% certain about is that it will fit into my vario without any need to chop n change.

All help appreciated as always

Cheers

Hi M0rk

I've tried 6 different online breakers and part finding websites, re-submitting each week but always turn up empty.

Same story with the local breakers and classifieds each week. It's certainly not for lack of effort.

Local SEAT Dealer said it would cost £245.00 before VAT and delivery to UK but SEAT Spain didn't have any stock and none on order anyway.

Unless I get realy lucky and find one just arrived at a breakers then I'm looking at the Polo Variant as a donor lol It's more or less the same scenario with them as well though :-(

Which is why I will gladly buy the one posted above from Germany if it is exactly what I'm looking for.

If anyone here can uncover one in the UK though I'll bite your hand off (Well, not literaly of course lol)

Hi Rich.h44

That sounds realy realy promising :)

Is it possible for you to take a pic of yours out of the car for me to compare if it's apples for apples?

Many thanks

Look on ebay for breaking varios, there was a tdi on there not long ago, also the polo variants are the same car with slightly different lights and badges.

Theres the ebay one, i thought i'd be kind and find it for you:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Seat-Cordoba-...39:1|66:2|65:12|240:1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

As for the SDI engine its what you said, a normally aspirated diesel engine, came in the MK4 polo, polo caddy, inca van and some MK4 golfs, not huge power but as you say can be very economical.

We didnt get the vario in an SDi over here but if you want parts the MK3 ibiza, (same car upto the back seats) came with that engine option.

Head unit can easily be hooked up to CD changers, you can find the changers on ebay quite often. There maybe a cable already in your car dependant upon spec its normally hiding behind the carpet on the left or right hand side of the boot by the wheel arches.

Hi Cupra Kid

Many many thanks for the ebay link, the question has been asked and await his reply.

Also considering asking if it has a working original SEAT CD playerbut would need to have exact same instrument panel as mine and mine doesn't have AC. No harm in asking I suppose tho?

And to sum it up my car is the love child of the SEAT Ibiza and VW Polo Variant lmao

CD changer should work A/C or no A/C the head unit behind that facia was fitted to all MK3 models/variants as it would cost more to make varying models to slot behind such a specific layout. MP3 CD changers will also work but you won't benefit from text in the display or being able to skip folders.

I'll have a look in our MK3 Ibiza tomorrow and get the cd changer part number that matches up to the dash unit for you and the cable type.

The Cordoba Saloon and Vario landed before the polo estate and classic so technically they are copies of the SEATs ;)
