Hi all,

After some advice as I've been to one or two garages recently who have been a bit untrustworthy for other repairs.

I've gone to a new garage after wanting a Cambelt/Waterpump change on my 2017 2.0 FR 184 diesel.

They have told me they had to rebuild 2 engines after a failure with official waterpumps/belt kits the previous year so stopped doing them, shortly after they checked the latest advice and Seat have changed the belt and waterpump to 140k mi.

This was all due to a fastener bolt coming loose in the waterpump allegedly.

Can anyone advise if this is true?

I'm on 76k mi on the original belt/pump.so I'd like to have it done, but this now I'm unsure what to do.

Any help is appreciated.

being its EA288 engine If there was an issue with parts failures on these parts id imagine there would be a lot more given just how many engines those kits were fitted to.

Its every 5 years for belt change so either way you're over the age if its original, Ive always had mine done at the main dealer and way earlier than that, wether that be Audi or Seat ive had, mostly because you get the full parts warranty with them no matter the age of the car. Granted the last one I needed to get done was 2020 so pricing might have gone up now.

I believe the 5 year interval has now been dropped by UK main dealers Seat/VW/Skoda/Audi? - there never was a 5 year stipulation from VAG Europe - just the millage limit.

Loads of threads on here about cambelts, have a search.
I was pleased I changed mine at 5 1/2 years and 85k miles - but others have reported 10 years and less miles and belt still looked good.

There are no bolts in the water pump to fail - usually if a tensioner/idler bolt fails or comes loose it's operator error either over/under torqueing.
The OE kit comes with high quality bolts.

I have a 2014 2.0 FR 184 ST and I had the switchable widget fail on my water pump so my cambelt and pump got changed a bit prematurely at about 90,000 miles although it was close to the 5 years that still seems to be a recommended timeframe.

I had a Gates kit fitted without the switchable water pump. It's been fine ever since.

The car is now on 142,000 miles but next March is the 5 year anniversary of the `new` belt. I had a service last week and asked them to check the belt. They said it showed signs of wear and said it's safer to change soon. "The 5 years is a guide not target" said my mechanic. Now I know that some will say the time/mileage is not absolute and VAG may say something else and the garage will want to sell me a cam change but the cost of cam belt failure is huge. Preventative maintenance is preferable to engine failure.

If you speak to a decent garage they can give you options of which cam belt kit to fit. A VAG specialist should be able to confidently answer any "I've heard" type questions and recommmend a reliable kit.

Anyone partly decent will sort you out.

I've called 2 VAG specialists today and they have both advised that they have changed to mileage to 140k regardless of miles.

One non garage wanted to charge more than the official price seat main dealers are charging.

I think I'll go ahead and get it done, I was just shocked at what I was being told when taking it in for repairs anyway.

I won't be far behind you with a 2nd cam belt job!
Not forgetting we have another small belt in oil - which has no service interval from VAG - fit for the life of the engine, they say - as when it fails so will your engine :eek:
I will be changing my oil pump belt in oil at the same time as my 2nd timing belt I think.

Just had mine done for the second time, cars only on 65000 miles but just 10 years old.

Seat wanted £975 so i took it to a Specialist who charge me £520 with all genuine parts but only 12-month warranty.

My old belts rollers and water pump looked like new.

I will be changing my oil pump belt in oil at the same time as my 2nd timing belt I think.
Is the oil pump belt part of any service schedule - at all? I suspect not based on your comment. Maybe I'll ask for that to be done as well. Any idea on price and can it be part of the cam belt change?

No, no service internal! :mad:
I don't know - the part is cheap - just a small belt. I think you need to remove the sump, and then the oil pump/vacuum pump housing. There is no tensioner for it.

I dropped the car off today for some rear pads and discs. They had got a me a quote for the cambelt and pump and said it was over £700. Sounded a lot to me but everything seems to cost more now. 🤷‍♂️

ouch :eek: just a standard cam belt job - not including the small oil pump belt in oil?
