2.0 8v tuning advise

hi guys,
i have a 2.0 8v cupra gti & it has been dynoed at Circuit motors at castle combe where it made 140bhp & 140Ibft & also it was run at dastek in fife in scotland where it also made 140 & 140...

i have seen mention to fitting a Mk2 8v gti head as the valves are suposidly bigger & also mention to fitting the mk2 8v gti cam into the AGG head,

It currently has a standard air box (well apart from having the arse hacked out) & a magnex/ custom exhaust which is straight through & has a centre box & retains the cat,

Any suggestions on where to go next?
the power & torque are pretty smooth all the way to the limiter & also the AFRs are pretty spot on running mid 12's from mid to top end till the limiter.........


It just needs more puff.............

140bhp????? Be honest I know the 8v's do pull higher than 115bhp stated in the book but never heard of 140bhp and the torque to match!

If you want to say I'm talking crap then keep to your current set up because you won't get anymore power than that without going for cam's, throttle bodies or forced induction!

im keen to find out what others have done........

In both instances i was operating the dyno myself so they are straight up figures with no b/s told by another party,

hmmmm might just stick some decent brakes on the boat & rebush it

engine is totally standard other than the air box being butchered, exhaust is a cat back magnex system with a modified rear section to give more clearance, other than that it looks totally standard,

i will post up the dyno plots some time next week when i get a chance

Well like I said if you believe it's a reliable reading then keep it standard because that's got to be the most powerful 8v I have heard of standard!

Since they only 115bhp book a lot run 120+ bhp standard.... sure it's an 8v and not a 16v running low on power?

Rolling road lottery I guess then.... all depends on what settings you run on the rollers to I guess!?

I'm from Bridgend but moved up to the Rhondda now, you?

just recently moved to crymych in pembrokeshire from scotland,

didnt do anything different to normal with the rolling roads, just jumped on at the end of a shift to get a figure n then did a back to back & castle combe for comparison,

I agree with Dave - there is no way an 8v would run that power without further mods beyond exhaust/air filter.

For reference, my 2E engined 8v ran, I think, 124bhp as standard on old, old AmD's rollers (when they were in Islip back in 1997).

Following a rechip and a supersprint exhaust (retains standard cat, no mid box, supersprint back box), that went up to 136bhp on the dyno in 1998. Then had it dyno'd again by Stealth in 2008 and they showed 139bhp.

So as Dave says, I think you are just about as high as you are going to get without resorting to a cam or forced induction.

I've run my 8v with that spec since 1998 and been very happy with it and it has been totally reliable. Only major expense was a precautionary clutch change at around the 100000 mile mark.

Unfortunately the tin worm has caught up with it so it is being broken in the new year once my new Cordoba is ready which will have all the old bits off Dave's engine on it (cams, manifold, throttle body, chip, sports cat, exhaust) and that becomes the new toy for 2010.

I can remember someone did try the Golf 8v cam in their Ibiza - I can't remember what the result was - I do seem to recall they might have made a mess of fitting it so had to do it again?

In answer to your original question, easiest route would be an Eaton 45 or 62 supercharger strapped on

I know of standard 8v's hitting 130bhp so i guess 140 with a few tweaks isn't totally unachievable.

I agree with the dyno lottery, but there's also an engine lottery with 8 and 16v's especially the 8v. All of them punch above their weight

Chrisdaman SC'd his Ibiza but the project was never finished!

M45 Eaton I think should bring about the 200bhp mark with the right mods. Maybe more as it's being put onto a 2.0

Be very interested how it goes out on track with my Ibiza but I wouldn't like to know at the same! lmao

In '97 I managed to get 126 BHP out of my AGG which was about the limit without remapping against running badly. I loved the torque from the engine and looked at getting it to put out some decent power, did the sums, sold the car and bought my ABF 16v which saved me about 2k on bits for equivalent HP.

12 years on or so - the 16v does not have enough torque or power, you just can't get enough of the stuff!

Get it supercharged - it's got to be the easiest way as all the bits are out there.

sorry to go slightly off topic, where did you get that supersprint exhaust from? I've had a bit of an issue with one for my 1.4, (bad customer service) Just wanted to know if you got one easier for your 8v as I am looking to upgrade when a years no claims kicks in.

I've had it on the car for over 10 years now, originall from Autotechnik in Southampton who went bust 3 or so years go. They did have problems getting it to fit - they sent the original back box back as they refused to fit it. The replacement was better but it still took a lot of effort to get it to fit, but once sorted (putting thick zip ties or pipe clips over the outside of the rubber exhaust hangers) it has been fine for all the time I've had it on the car.

use to drive to them to get the servicing done on my old 2.0 8V (really really nice old married couple who used to run it)

Yep, I used to do a 120 mile round trip to see Alan and Vanessa, and they serviced all 3 of my cars. Unfortunately they separated and as a familly owned business it had to be split and I guess neither could afford to buy the other out, so it got sold on. THe new owners were new to the trade and over the period of a year or so the mechanics left, the quality of the work went rapidly downhill and that was that. Real shame as they both really knew their stuff and I ofter used to phone Vanessa up for help when stuck doing my own work on the car.
