power steering, do it yourself too, its easy, loosen the retaining nut and the belt will come off easy then retighten (not too much).

Maximuss, how did you get on changing the PAS belt?
I've just ordered 2 new drive belts (large and small) - somethings squealing down there!!!!
The larger one should come off fairly easy when you move the tensioner but I can't see anything similar on the smaller one (around the 2 pulleys). How do you tension the smaller one, or is it standard fit?
It also looks a bit of a tight squeeze down the side. Will I have to go in behind the road wheel and through the inner wing?
Thanks for any info.

Bluenose,
sorry mate, i haven't got around to ordering it yet.
If or when i do i shall let you know. I would image the easy access would be behing the front wheel and arch liner as i have to spray WD40 there every weekend.

Thanks, will keep an eye out for your reply. If I manage to get mine done before hand, I'll post a reply.

Which/what retaining nut do you have to loosen?
Looking through the Haynes manual, it looks like you have to take the pulley off the front of the pump (allen screws holding it on) to remove the v-belt. Does the belt have to be tensioned after?
And it all looks sooooooo easy considering they've got the engine on a bench!!!!!!
Thanks.

OK, both belts are now on (alternator/water pump and pas belt.
The pas belt was, to put it mildly, a bit of a pain to get on. This was due to the pas unit refusing to swing out of the way. Didn't realise that you had to loosen 2 other bolts on the unit before trying to slacken the tension!!!!!
After stripping a few teeth off the tensioner screw, I decided to loosen every bolt that was on the unit. With a liberal dousing of WD40 and a few technical swipes from a copper mallet, the unit finally moved.
Once the old belt was off, I was able to replace the alternator belt.
Then the new pas belt went on and tensioned correctly (locking off all the other bolts after!!!!).
Good result, no squeals and purring like a kitten. Shocking state of the old belts.

only thing i usually do over winter is wash/clean/screenwash

forgot to mention, the wheel arch liner doesnt have to come off if you can jack tyhe car up high enough, also , if you have no engine tray fitted your belts will wear a lot faster due to getting wet more often.

Yep, you're right about the wheel arch liner. I just had to loosen the tray under the engine enough to get at the belts.
And I can also agree with the idea of NOT doing this type of job at this time of year. Icy cold knuckles versus sharp, hard metal - there was only going to be one winner
Unless anything breaks between now and the Spring, I ain't doing nothing but fill the car with petrol and screenwash :D

Guys,

sorry to sound like a bird, but i cannot get the old PAS belt off. :censored:

What nuts do you loosen?
*i loosened the bottom one (the one with the thick toothed wahser on)
*and a couple from around the other side from under the car.
****ing thing don't want to move anywhere.
i have left it in my garage with the wheel off on the jack, so i can carry on after a few pointers from you guys.

Also, i took some photos of the area with the wheel off but how do i stick them to this message??

You loosen the mounting bolts on the pas pump (it swings on these fixings)
then wind the toothed washer to take off all the tension off the belt and then you have to pry the belt off the pulleys.
