I've got an OE back box off my 94 GTi buried somewhere in my shed. I'll dig it out tomorrow and measure it for you.

Depends. Early GTi's (like mine) have a single H4 bulb, as do the lower models of the range. At some point, the GTi got upgraded to twin H1 bulbs. So if you look at your lights and see one large reflector, you've got H4; if you see two smaller reflectors, you've got H1s.

how well does it fit mate, was there much modification needed as i looked at exactly the same exhaust, booked it in to a well known performance garage and claimed it wouldnt fit!! are you looking at selling the back box then?

anything will fit.

Seen someone else on here with the same exhaust on, i was gonna get it too.

The bore may be different if its universal, but then just buy a reducer to make it to the right size. I cant see it being any longer than the standard system so there should be plenty of room behind the bumper for it.

Infact thinking about it, it looks to be the same can size as the standard exhaust, itd need hanger welding to it if there arent any but any powerflow or the like can do that sort of thing

I have a Magnox Stainless back box (including an adaptor pipe) from a 97 R 8V GTI, could let you have it at £25.00 but as it's heavy you would need to be in striking distance of Cumbria or Sheffield

I think the diameter is 50mm on the 8v and 55mm on the 16v.

Also you'll need to consider how long the universal rear box will be as the exhaust routes over the rear beam (see pic below) so you'd need to cut the old box off just where it goes in and if it's to short it'll not pop out the back and if it's two long it won't fit.

You'll also need to look at the hangers as they would need to be modded as well.

Hi,

I spent last saturday fitting my magnex one as in the picture. They fit absolutely fine. You even get new hangers/rubbers with it. You get the backbox, the over axle pipe and some shite clamps which need binning and replacing with proper exhaust clamps.

You have to cut the existing pipe off leaving 80mm just before it bends around parallel towards the cat. So at the bit in line with the out section (if you understand that you deserve a medal).

Anyways - This is the only dodgy bit. I found the existing pipe a fraction too small for the new stainless to fit over, so i packed it with putty and a section from a tin can. Covered the whole joint in exhaust paste and clamped it up.

The new pipe does sound very nice- and not over-loud. The box is very big thow - gotta be carefull over speed humps.
