My mate has just bought a Y reg 2001 Passat diesel 130 Sport, how can I tell if this has a PD engine & how do I tell if it has a VNT turbo?

Have a quick look in the boot near the spare wheel, the sticker should say 96kw if its a 130pd.
Same sticker should also be inside front cover of the user manual.
Other option, look on the ECU sticker, its in front of driver in engine bay. Post the ECU numbers and i will let you know what car it is.

The engine code on the VIN plate should have the letters AVF, this identifies the motor as the hi-torq 130bhp version. As said above the sticker should also say 96KW.

It should have a 6-speed box and 7-spoke 16 inch "Road America" alloys, plus the lowered suspension.

Cheers guys.
It's got an auto gearbox with a tiptronic type manual up/down gear lever on it & 17" alloys - I'll have a look at the VIN when it's light.
