Just wondering if a mk 3 1.4 has ever been modded to 100bhp before? and what would be involved to make it happen?

I dont want to get into the financial implications, and the inevitable 'just buy a cupra' response because its not an option for me insurance wisejust yet. Im starting a gap year before uni, so was looking for a project to fill my time, and sounded like a cool idea from my friend who has a 1.4 8v polo.

Is it just a silly idea?

cheers guys

100hp from a 1.4 wouldn't be impossible if you have an endless budget, cheaper option would be buy a polo 1.4 16v 100hp engine and bolt it in.

I know its not what you wanted to hear... but

The hike in insurance to cover it at a young age with the mods needed would probably be similar to cupra money..

pretty much what I thought :/ ah well think ill just be waiting it out until the insurance is somewhat bearable.

just out of interest what mods do you think would be needed?

and how much work is the 16v 1.4 engine swap? mine is on 145k and im afraid its on its last legs anyway.

Without forced induction, I reckon you're looking at head work, cams, good intake and exhaust, maybe a set of carbs or throttle bodies? Proper old-school type upgrades. But I probably wouldn't do it on a 145k mileage engine.

And yes, the mods required would limit your insurance options and make it expensive.

yeh i was looking at replacing the engine like for like, but whilst the new engine was out, possibly dong some work to give it a bit more oomph, but as you say insurance limits make it pretty much a nono. probably have to stick with exhaust and cotton filter for now then

Find a rear ended Mk4 Ibiza with the 100ps engine and bolt it in (Formula Sport, DAB etc).

Alternatively, buy a Mk3 1.6 8v Sport. Antnee's old one and mine were always close.

alright alright, i admit, makes sense to go for a cupra as and when i have the means. Think in the meantime ill get some cheapo coilies and an exhaust and make the most out of it :) still love my 1.4 to bits, even if it is slow as **** haha
