1.6 Engine Resonating..

Hey guys,

I've had my mk1 1.6 for over 6 months now and it has always had a strange noise at around 2-2500rpm, which when driving almost sounds like a squealing belt, so naturally I changed the V-belt, which didn't help at all.

Upon further inspection it turns out the noise still happens with the car sat still in neutral, with clutch up or down and is definitely a resonating noise from the engine block somewhere.

The only odd thing I did notice the other day was when sat on a steep incline (someones drive) I couldn't get the noise to happen

I did a search and couldn't find anythign conclusive on here.

Any help is most appreciated

bump.... surely somebody can point me in the right direction? im not mechanically retarded but bar stripping the engine down im stumped
