1.4mpi stall when coasting

Out for a dinner last night and on the drive over the car decided to cut out when I was coasting (naughty- I know) up to a junction. No big issue really as I just lifted the clutch and life continued as normal. Happened again on the way home, though as the missus was driving it happened when she took her time shifting up.

Obviously letting the revs drop from high-ish (prolly 3k) to idle somtimes makes it stall occasionally (I think the revs just drop and fail to recover). The idle is smooth otherwise, and pull as well as it always has.

A mate suggested giving the TB a bit of a clean up, but is there anything else I should be investigating?

Suspected as much, as it's blowing a little oil out the crankcase breather into the airbox (had a similar thing with my mk2 polo!), so it's probably down to that.

On a similar note - would that sort problem be logged on the ECU? I'm kinda new to cars with computers in, so am wondering how much info I can prise from it's 'brain' and how I can acheive it..

I had this problem on my ibiza a couple of years ago. I just could not figure out what was wrong with it having changed plugs, ignition leads, fuel filter, rotary arm, distributor cap with none of them stopping the stalling.

I took it to the garage and got it sorted, dont know what they did but as the revs fall it does not return to idle instantly it holds bout 1100rpm then drops back down.

That's the behavior I'd expect - instead the revs drop to below idle then pick up, as if the idle circuit is too weak or cutting in late. I'll see what some carb-cleaner and a rag does this evening (weather permitting)...

I'm having the same problem at the minute - found some posts on here that suggest that it can also be caused when the pipe out of the airbox to the engine gets mucky. Apparently a good clean out sorts the problem.

Yup, as I mentioned - the pipe is for recirculating gasses from the crank-case and occasionally brings up a spot or three of oil which then deposit themselves on the throttle-body. If it persists I might try extracting the seperator from behind the block and giving it a rinse through with petrol to un-gunk it.
