1.2TDI Ecomotive + Blue Spark tuning box

Hey peeps!

Currently driving an '11 plate 1.2TDI Ecomotive and i was left un-impressed with how the real world MPG figure differed from the manufacturers claims.

Driving like a granny i would average 70mpg on my 50 mile commute from Nottinghamshire to Lincolnshire, and could drop to mid 60's if i even caught the faintest whiff of any traffic :(

I started driving at 50mph maximum (55mph before) and that improved it by roughly 5mpg.

I thought about a remap and started googling, and i stumbled accross a company that offers tuning boxes called Blue Spark.

Now i've heard about tuning boxes before, i was told they were just a bunch of wires and resistors hot glued together in a box by some 9yo in some sweat shop in China that fools your car into upping the fuel rail pressure to achieve an increase in torque.

I was somewhat dubious but don't want a remap because i want to be able to put it back to stock whenever i need (3 year available car warranty, if it blows up i want it to be completely stock so they'll fix it for me :D) so i decided to bite the bullet and bought one of their Pro boxes with boost control, i thought if i'm going to do this i might as well get something that improves boost as well as fuelling.

I tried it on it's default setting and torque noticably improved throughout the rev range, also giving it a good boot it's a lot livelier than before.

Knowing it was 'adjustable' i wanted to see what the top setting was like :D the instruction book said to increase a little bit at a time, from setting c turn the dial, then setting D, turn the dial etc etc. I threw caution to the wind and put the jumper on setting E and turned the dial all the way up to 9 :scary:

I started it up no problem, tootled along at 30mph in 5th gear and the mpg readout quickly reached 80mpg no problem. Took it for a quick boot down the A52 and i was impressed, i floored it up the slip road and fook me the power was MUCH better than the stock 75hp, before this i was driving a Peugeot 307 1.6 petrol, it wasn't fast but it was acceptable, and now my Ibiza feels even quicker than the peugeot, probably because it's a lot lighter :D

So far i've been driving it on the max setting since my last fill up (50mph maximum, i'm an eco driver :p) and currently just used a quarter (2 bars) of the tank after 250 miles, now i know the tank reading isn't particularly accurate, so i'll wait and see how many miles i get before it needs filling again.

Now averaging 84mpg on my commute up until i hit traffic, then falls back to about 80-82mpg.

I'm impressed so far and if i'm saving fuel in real terms and the thing isn't just tricking the trip computer into thinking it's using less fuel, i'll be very happy indeed.

Interesting post. I think the proper tuning boxes with a real mapped chip are a good buy.

Getting 84 mpg is amazing :funk:

For ref you can squeeze 70 mpg from a Mk4 1.9 Tdi FR with the standard 130 bhp.

Finally, I think you will get more response if you post this in the MK5 section of the forum as your in the Mk4 buddy.

All the best mate :)
