Hi everyone,
Some of you may know I own a mk5 1.2 tsi. When starting the car I get quite a loud metallic rattle for about 3-5 seconds on cold starts. From what I've read over the Internet it seems like a common problem with this engine - a weak timing chain/ chain tensioner.
Again from reading I have heard that since the production of the engine VW/ seat have brought out stronger chains and have eventually changed the engine to belt driven.
Now my car went in for a service with awesome gti (VAG specialists) and I asked them to check it out. They put it down on the advisories and said further time would be needed.
I rang them today and asked if they are fairly sure it's the timing chain/ tensioner can they replace it rather than waste time (and my money on labour) checking what the fault could be.
They said yes, so I asked for a price.... £700-£900!!
All I want to know is, is that a fair price because it took me by surprise but I do realise it's a big job!
Anyone had this work done on theirs, any advice and experiences would be great!
Thanks for reading :)

How much service history with Seat dealers does that car have, and exactly what age is that car? The reason that I ask that is, VAG will have been doing that work for some owners FOC if they stayed within the service coverage, so maybe try having a chat with your local, or supplying Seat dealer about getting it done for free, or with some Seat contribution towards the bill. I would not think that doing nothing is an option.

Thanks for the reply, I'm pretty sure it had full seat service history. However the place I bought it from did a small service before they handed the car over to me, this wasn't a seat garage. I'm going to go into my local seat tomorrow and see what they say, if that fails I'm going to ring round a few more vag specialist garages and get some quotes. Thanks again

You need to press them (Seat) firmly but in a civil manner so that they know that you know that this is a known issue with some of these engines and that Seat etc have been dealing with these problems, in my mind, I feel that you will only have one chance to make a case with Seat, get it right and they will sort that car out FOC or with a contribution to cover some of the costs, one thing though, the cost to you with them fixing it with a "good will" contribution from Seat might be more than a VAG indie charges for the complete job - just guessing on my part, good luck!
