£200 Repairs to get through MOT?

Hi all,

So its that squeaky bum time of year again where the LC goes in for its MOT and unfortunately it failed on the below.

Reason(s) for failure
Offside Front Brake hose excessively chafed (3.6.B.4d)
Nearside Front Suspension arm rubber bush deteriorated resulting in excessive movement (2.4.G.2)

Been quoted £200 to repaired and through MOT. Sound alright?

Was also wanting to check will the car need a wheel aliment after this kind of repair?

That's not entirely unreasonable.

A pair of good quality arms (with new bushes and ball joints already installed) should set you back about £70-80. I bought some last year from Car Spares - Moog branded I think.

I've not bought brake hoses for a few years but I'd expect them to cost somewhere in the region of £20~40, even for braided items.

The rest of that cost will be labour. If you want to reduce your repair costs I'd suggest you consider at least sourcing the parts yourself, and if you have time/capability to do it, fitting them too.

When my arms were condemned in last years MOT, I ended up sourcing the parts myself and paying a local mechanic to fit them because time was against me. Total parts and repair cost for me was around £140 against the £230 the MOT garage had quoted. When I took it back for the retest, I conveniently forgot to mention that they didn't appear to have charged me the £10 for the headlight adjustment - that's what they get for trying to rip me off.

Yes, you will need your alignment checked afterwards - mine was way off.

Thanks for confirming, just looking around my area and how much it costs to get front wheels alignment done. Not had one done so not sure how much they are? Seen a few places do a free check then guess they will tell me how much or think ATS do STANDARD ALIGNMENT £36.99 or TWO WHEEL COMPUTERISED ALIGNMENT £45.99.

Standard laser alignment at my local tyre filter is £20. Radar alignment costs a bit more but isn't worth it unless you have adjustable camber/caster
