wastegates

hi guys i seen a uprated wastegate for the ibiza fr tdi and was just wondering what difference do they make?? and what do they do exactly just let out the excess gas is it?? thanks

the are afew of me and my mates talking about getting these cupra's and one of the lads was talking about a wastegate to go on his will this work on a standard tubo and which is better for the car? ive searched but found nought.
