Leon Cupra/MK4 Golf Turbo

A friend of mine has a MK4 Golf and sometimes on start up and when he boots it black ish gray smoke comes out the back and felt a slight loss in power Was wondering if anyone knows if this could be turbo or turbo sills or something else
