small number plate - 7 characters - possible?

Hi I've searched with no avail. First up, I want to stay legal. My question is, is it possible to reduce the size of the front number plate (height and width) Has anyone done this? if so where online and what dimensions I've found this, but still dont know if what i want to do is...
