Following on from the discussion about these cheap tuning boxes from Ebay, and that they're basically just a resistor in place of the fuel temp sender, I trawled for some more info.

This item on UK-mkivs gives a bit more info.

Yep, seems to be known as the "Beer" mod or "Evry" mod, but generally these names seem to refer to the non-PD mod.

The article I linked to is for PD engines only but works on exactly the same principle...

Sounds like some experimentation might be on the cards, after all this connector is very easy to access and it's easy to get hold of a resistor.

I'm wondering what effect it'll have on mine, which has already got an ABT chip but is still a bit down on power compared to the Revo peeps. Hopefully it won't just create smoke and a rough idle; if I play about with resistance values enough I hope I can fine tune enough to add just a little more....

Just nipped out in my lunch break to order a matching pair of connectors from the local VW dealer...

Right, where's Maplin's website ? :D

Yes might give it a go to get some more juice out this shed...;)

You'll go limp...:p (the car that is)...:D :D

The EVRY mod is pretty good for some extra umf, but used for very long periods of time means a clogged KAT.

Well I didn't manage to spend the time doing proper testing over Christmas, but did manage to pull the connector off and wedge in a 500 ohm resistor. I thought I'd start off on the cautious side and see what happened.

So far the only difference is a bit of soot when the engine's cold; when it's warmed up I can't really notice any difference other then the trip computer being a bit more optimistic on mpg....

Next step is to drop down to maybe 400 ohms and see what happens. For non-chipped cars apparently you can go down to 150 ohm for best results, but I don't think that's a good idea as it's already been chipped !

I'll keep you posted :D

you could try gettin a variable resistor instead of trialing with normal resistors. It may be slightly more expensive initially but may be a lot less hastle in the long run.

I couldn't find any variable resistors, must've chucked them out.

Anyway, I wired the two new connectors together to make a straight-through link, then soldered a 1k resistor across the middle so it's running in parallel with the sensor. Then connected inline with the temp sensor.

When the engines idling hot after a normal run, the sensor itself is roughly 850 ohms, so with the 1k (actually measured at 960 ohm) in parallel this gives around 450 ohm hot, but running in parallel does mean it'll increase a little bit when cold and perhaps smoke slightly less (won't have a huge effect though).

I can't say I've noticed much effect yet, other than a little more soot - mainly when the turbo's spooling up, doesn't seem to smoke much at full throttle over higher revs. Still soots quite a lot more when cold. One side effect I have noticed is that sometimes, when flooring it in higher gears just as the turbo spools up the engine shudders a bit...easy to drive around if you're expecting it but I think I'll disconnect it for the RR day....
If it has made any improvement, it's very slight. It's possibly made it *slightly* more driveable off-boost, but that could equally be due to me having got into the habit of driving more sensibly after ferrying passengers round over Christmas :D
The mpg reading definitely seems more optimistic, but I think it's misleading.

Next step is to drop down to say, 400 ohm combined and see what happens.

It would be good if someone with a stock, non-chipped 130 could try this and see what gains are to be had; I'm wondering whether being chipped already means I won't see any more useful gains.

Apparently on a stock engine you can replace with sensor with a resistor as low as 150 ohm....

Sold - Oct 2006.
in theory it shouldn't matter if your chipped or not....

the sensor will still be changing the fueling on your chipped motor too... so the resistor of 150 should be ok....

the worst it'll do is throw up an error saying the temp sensor is fecked :)

Theoretically yes, but we've had a few guys running chips and the "EVRY MOD" going limp in 5th above 3.5Krpm.

I don't know how much further I can go, because I get a noticeable engine shudder when accelerating in high gears when the turbo starts to spin.

Anyone know why this actually happens ?

I'm not exactly sure but it sounds like mega torque problem..:D :D

How's soot production? I did see a 110 leaving a trail of soot on the ground with the "EVRY MOD" and a straight through exhaust (turned down tip)...:D :D. I was surpised that the exhaust was not loud at all. You could here the turbo tail off through the exhaust (almost like a dump valve).

Torque figures will be known on Sunday at the RR day...

Soot ? Well I'm still only running with an effective resistance of 400-450 ohm, nowhere near the limit of 150ohm. When cold it does smoke quite a bit more, when warm it only really smokes when the turbo first spools up. At full throttle higher revs it hardly smokes at all. It's most noticeable when you're being lazy and trying to accelerate in a high gear, and the revs hang around in the 1500-1700 band for a while. If I've been crawling in traffic for a while, then floor it in second there's a *huge* cloud but only briefly...

After the RR day I should know where I'm at power/torque wise, and whether I want to go any further or not, as remember it's already ABT chipped.

You mention the turbo tail off through the exaust... - I have that & my exhaust is still stock! Intresting...

Just thinking about your comment Paulo, don't think it's a mega torque problem as it's below peak torque revs. I reckon it's some side effect of the extra fuelling, but can't understand why.
