My car has always gave out a puff off blue smoke on startup snide I got it but it never used any more oil than normal so it never worried me. I had the timing belt done 3k ago and since then it's had a lumpy idle sometimes hot or cold and it's puffing blue smoke out the exhaust while the revs are jumping up and down only on idle, when I drive it there's no smoke at all and it drives spot on. Sometimes it idles rough and chucks smoke out but sometimes it doesn't, it really has got my head baffled.

I'm considering having it mapped again by a different tuner or getting someone to check the setup on the injectors, then I've also read about the turbo on its way out.

Can anyone shed some light on this please as it's a pain in the backside sometimes and quite embarrassing, I had to turn the engine off in McDonald's drive through a couple of days ago as it got so bad.

Are you absolutely sure that whoever did the belt, changed it correctly?

I'm sure they are supposed to set the engine at a certain point before they remove the old belt to retain the timing settings.

The timing could be out?

I've thought this too but the garage who done it said he's done hundreds of them.

Could it all be down to the timing?

Last time I had a problem with a lumpy idling car it turned out it was misfiring, which lead to changing all the HT leads.

lumpy idle is either a timing issue or a misfire, as you have had the belt changed recently and I presume it was OK before you had it changed, I can only assume the 2 are linked

the garage may say they have 'done hundreds of them' but did they set the markers on the cams right or whatever they have to do and lock it in place before they took the old belt off and put s new one on.

you cant just turn the engine off take the belt off & shove a new one on.

I would hazard a pretty good guess the timings out

I might take it somewhere else to
Have the timing checked? Does everything have to come off again to check it? I don't know how it's done that's all...

From my limited knowledge. .....too much watching Ed China on wheeler dealers.....

there are usually a timing mark on the cam shaft cogs, which have to be aligned & then the cams are locked in place before the belt is removed. ........TDC (top dead centre)?.

once the belt is refitted then the timing is set....if its not correct the timing is then adjusted. ...retarded or advanced until its right

Im sure someone eith more knowledge than me can help, but I would think that it would all have to come off again.

Yeah pd170, if the timing was out would the engine not be really rough and driving like a bag of nails? It drives spot on, and like I say only idles funny and smokes sometimes.

Any garage be able to do it? What sort of price would it be roughly? How you so certain this is the problem?

Oh and does it mean the belt will have to come back off and be refitted?

Yeah but I've been thinking will he not just brush it off and not even check it then when I return to pick it up he will just say it's fine. I've already spoke to him about it once and he said I've done loads of them and said it will be fine and he said it would be my turbo or injectors.

Then I rang seat and asked about warranty on the injectors and I explained the problem to him and he said if the injectors were faulty the car wouldn't run full stop. So that's left me with turbo in the back of my head or timing.

The quantity of belts he's done is irrelavent, I've changed 100s of belts but that doesn't mean mistakes are made from time to time.

You could take it to seat, have them re-check the timing and if it's out get them to correct it and send him the bill!

Would it not run like a bag of nails and damage the engine if it was a tooth out? When I say rough idle I mean the revs only jitter a tiny but, but it's noticeable, shakes the car a little bit but it still drives spot on.

The cam pulleys are adjustable. If the timing was seriously far out then damage can occur and there'd be a cam to crank correlation fault or it just wouldn't run.

Will it all have to be stripped down to check everything or can it all be checked from a computer plugged into the car?
