Got a 3y 8m old 140pd and today after 2 minutes of motorway it went into limp mode and I was stuck at 65mph.

I pulled up at the next junction and drove round it a couple of times before parking up and turning off the engine. Restarted and it was the same. Turned off again and then opened bonnet and restarted, gave it a good rev and then tried again and all was well. I did my 50 mile trip at a good rate of knots and then later in the day was 45 miles into coming home and it happened again.

Tried the car again a few hours after and all is well. I can't find much on here (seems to be mainly dpf issues) but seen some stuff on other VAG forums saying veins may be blocked.

here's one insert.....

yep, i'd second the sticking turbo, exactly the same as i had on mine from your description.

wd40 on the actuator and linkage and a good shove backwards and forwards a few times, and its been fine for the last 12000 miles.

Can anyone give me any advice??

sounds very similar to what i had on my 140 altea of a similar age

if you keep in the lower rev range your fine , give it some and it goes into limp mode til you turn the engine off, its prob one of two things the n71 valve ( if you have one as not all do ) or the vanes on the turbo are stuck or sticking

ended up having the turbo replaced

Cheers for that, I'll see how I go for now, I've read having the turbo reconditioned/replaced is often the end result.

Well it's been 2 weeks and all has been well. I've had a few days where I've needed to get around sharpish and gave it some wellie, had a few trips over to Sheffield and one late night came back at a fair rate of knots, so far so good, guess time will tell and I'll dig out this thread if it goes limp again, either that or consult a doctor :D

Updating this as I wish to keep a record for myself and anyone else who suffers similar.

Been fine until 16.10.11 as I Was coming back from Sheffield late on and was passed by a car that was "giving it some", though I would speed up to see how fast he was going and went into limp mode again, as motorway was baron I turned off ignition and restarted immediately and was good to go.

Not sure if this means it is more likely to be blocked veins or points to another issue but will keep this thread updated whenever I have an issue.

Going to order one now, I'll report on how it went "when" I get round to doing it. I'm a decent DIY'er, build/fix pc's but haven't touched a car for years, I'll google how to do it as I haven't got access to a ramp or pit.

my pd 170 has had same problem had turbo cleaned and all was well for a week till it started doin it again gone back to garage for the 6th time this week to try n sort it people have been tellin me all sorts of diffrent things n75 maff sensor map sensor but i dont get any codes wen i have it read

Think I'll probably use a local mechanic then and insist I am there to see how its done and its done right, not 45 minutes soaking for example.

sounds like a MAF sensor to me like, switch ignition off and restart and fine again
maf sensor lives on pipe from airbox to intake manifold, they get worse and problem gets worse as they break down, it checks air going in,
clasic problem if you ask me ;)

hmm wouldnt agree, MAFs very rarely cause limp mode, they die slowly. Chuck vagcom on it and log MAF and Boost requested vs actual to see if its a MAF or boost issue.

have to deffo disagree,
a maf sensor when its breaking down will cause limp mode get me home, you will pull out and floor it and then suddenly loose all power as if your turbo has packed in, that is limp mode kicked in
stop switch ignition off and start back up and every things fine again till next time . the problem starts the odd once or twice then gradualy gets worse as the sensor is breaking down , you can pick them up for around 40 quid on ebay thats how commen they are to be faulty
i had an audi with same problem oh and my golf gt tdi, both had same problem, its a commen fault but a quick fix with replacement, vag never picked it up mind

i could be wrong here as it might not be the fault on this car but a maf sensor will kick limp mode in :p

myturbodiesel.com/1000q/multi/limp-mode-TDI-fix.htm have a nose at section 7
