Well... since the departure of tonys Golf, i decided to buy one and do exactly the same as him and put a 2l 16v in it on bike carbs :D

Got the car for a tidy sum and then me and Danny Guthrie set to work on transforming her...

Pics of the car before the conversion:

way too clever :) what ever happened to chalk and bog rolls huh >?:):)

perfect for the mk1 and a cleaner engine bay too i bet - mmmm

*
just a tip

while it's off and easier to do - slide the hose clips so they sit underneath - will look tidier in the end all smooth

Thanks everyone... good to see a few interested in my little project, must say the old timers walking past the garage like a good chat about it, being so old and everything

haha... 9th photo up from the bottom... building the manifold... that there is pure toilet role and masking tape construction :D

car looks like a really clean example and a fun project.
are the carbs going to be re jetted with a dyno jet kit atall out of intrest?

Not sure what this means tbh, but they are getting new jets to suit the car engine... think im going for 180 jets for the initial run... whether or not they get changed once rolling roaded im not sure

Nice project there
I've got a mate doing the same but for a track car.
Hows the body work, floor and chassis rails?
I'm not too sure about the wheels and the down and out stance but suppose its down with the kids to do that.
This going to be a track or road car?

update*

Engine is all spangly now, all cleaned up and degreased which took a very long time, but well worth it... most of the time was getting the rusty metal back to clean stuff

oh and yes i do realise the rocker cover isnt done, but thats going to get powder coated along with a few more bits :)

Also had to fabricate an alternator mounting bracket

and tensioning mechanism

I love reading these kind of threads!

One thing (alright, lots) of things I don't understand ; what's the benefit of fitting bike carbs to the engine?

looking lovely mate!
can't wait to hear this when finished mate!

One thing (alright, lots) of things I don't understand ; what's the benefit of fitting bike carbs to the engine?

if you look at the original inlet, you can see where the throttle body is located (on the left) and when open there is "x" amount of pressure, but then this is then split into 4 (each cylinder) so then it's "x/4" per cylinder

but as the bike carbs won't do this, so has better pressures (well bigger) so can add alot of power (for a N/A car)
