Black Gloss Centre Console (with better pics)

Had last week off and after seeing the pics of Allan's interior ( http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=205576 ) I decided to have a go myself....

Deciding to be cautious as I had not done anything like this before I had a go at the SatNav fascia first as this is under £10 to replace (I was quoted £73+vat for binacle and couldnt even find a part number for the climate control fascia)

All I bought was some 600 wet/dry paper, can of plastic primer, can of gloss black paint and can of lacquer all came to under £20.

I started by cleaning and sanding using 600 wet/dry paper then a few coats of primer, 3/4 coats of gloss and 3/4 coats of lacquer. As I said im no expert so maybe this is too much or too little, but It looks good to me.

I used DanGBs SatNav tutorial to remove everything - http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=139255

The Climate Control unit is a :censored: to get out and all the little slats fall off when you remove it [:@] but that was really the only hard part. Its a little daunting pulling half the car apart and I wish I had taken a picture as it looked horrendous for the best part of a week. As long as you know where all the screws are (all in Dans guide) you cant really damage anything.

I masked off the dull black part around the dials as I thought it would maybe shine on the dials too much if it was glossy.

I also took off the side vents which was fairly easy, they have clip releases at about 8,11,1 & 4 oclock and then it just falls out, luckily the slats are all attached in one piece :)

While I had the dash all off I hard wired my Snooper using this thread - http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=183644&highlight

And re-routed my satnav aerial along behind the dash, up the A pillar and across the top of the windscreen and it is now hidden behind my DartTag. I would recommend this to anyone with an RNS510 as before I used to get maybe 3 or 4 sats out of 10 now I get 8 or 9 so much better reception.

Finally I put on a dial/vent set I bought, in fact it was strange as they arrived the day before this thread - http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=209274&highlight=chrome I was obviously a bit worried, but they fitted fine and the seller emailed me the day after I fitted them and said that a 'wrong batch' had gone out and if I had problems to return them.

Only thing to consider now is the trim on the RNS510, gear knob and steering wheel, but to be honest I think it looks ok for now at least. Just need to try and get a black leather arm rest from somewhere...

Next step is the MDI interface for my iPod and soon to get iPhone

I like it, just dont like the contrast between the various buttons and the gloss black though.... too much hassle painting and labeling those though I'd say.

Now you need the Golf RNS510 with the gloss insert, instead of the green.

How in gods name did you get the rings of the left and right heater vents? You said that they are clipped in but how did you release the clips?

Cheers
