I need help, car is very sick

Driving to football tonight, accelerating off a roundabout and got a little wheel spin, thought nothing of it and just lifted off the throttle. All of a sudden I hear POP/BANG and lose power and EML light comes on. Car feels/sounds like the exhaust has gone. Pull over and there is a nasty smell coming out of the exhaust tip and it sounds like the baffles have gone in the back box!! Turn car off for a few mins and then re-start, still got EML light on but it goes out after a few seconds.
So I start to limp it home. Pull out and there is no power what so ever. First thoughts were turbo went pop but as I drive further I can still hear it trying to spool. So I'll rule that out.
Driving home and notice EML light coming on and going back off, at randome I first thought. But paying more attention to it it would only come on when the car was requesting boost (foot down a little EML on, lift off a little more and it goes out).
It almoste feels like its running on 3 cylinders, which got me thinking it could it be coil pack(s) or spark plug related?

Only thing I have done to the car in the last few weeks was fit a Forge 007p today before I went out, but all seamed and acted fine.

I dont have vag-com and I know I desperately need to get it on. Worsed case, I'll have to pay a garage to stick a computer on and see what it says.

Any Ideas guys?

Does it sound like a scooby? If so ... coilpack sounds likely. Either that or a pipe off

It's been mapped quite recently hasn't it? I believe that's one of the things that can show up post remap, it just accelerates the failure of an already weak part

Don't buy cheap copies if you do end up buying a coilpack.

Has all the symptoms but you'd need vagcom to be double sure ( with driving a diesel, coilpack failure isn't a problem for me )

Hopefully a few more will confirm

sounds exactly like what happened to my FR a month back, thrashing it away from a junction in second and there was a bang and all power went, and i though the exhaust had dropped off, sounded like a scooby...awful!!

turned out to have blown a pipe off underneath.
dad's a mechanic so he fixed it so dunno what it was other than it was a u-shape pipe that needed replacing. it had broken all its fixings.

I second that as this happened to me yesterday, mine was a intercooler pipe coming loose, by the sounds of it I reckon yours is the same. It was soo slow, and it whenever I tried to accelerate it produced a smoke screen but mine is a diesel.

Driving to work this morning the problem was not as bad as last night, but it is in limp mode. EML light flashing constantly until boost is requested then it starts flashing, but I do have 5psi now.

Still sounds like a scooby and just noticed the mpg is down considerably, normaly get 42-45mpg on the way to work but only managed 28 this morning.

The symptoms are making me think it is a coil pack. Does anyone know which one is the most likely to go first? Think I remember Dave (DJP) saying something like #2-3-4-1 in that order?

Going to go to Euro car parts as soon as it opens and get a few.

Try #3 first - unless you've got vag-com running.

as others have said... likely boost pipe has popped off or split, or coil pack said bye bye. (scooby sounding engine afterwards)
It would still try to boost with a coilpack gone, but maybe a couple went at the same time? (happened to me once on a test day)

Just make sure you get it sorted asap - you don't want to be driving with unburned fuel going through the CAT for long!

Phew...Glad it's sorted mate

Might be an idea to get another coil pack to have as a spare..if one goes, its quite possible another could go around the same time.

You can always get a refund or ebay them for good money if you end up not using it..
