Tyre Wear

Hi all,

I was just wondering what sort of miles you were getting with your front tyres. My tyres don’t have much left on them and I have done just over 8.5k miles now.

I don’t drive like a nutter, but at the same I don’t drive like a granny (averaged 44.3mpg since new) . I have a FR TDI with the 18s and the tyres are bridgestone as supplied with the car. I was hoping to get a fair few more miles than this.

I have just under 14K on the Cupra and probably 3 mm or so left.

I have noticed the grip on the car has really deteriorated so the tyres need changing now even though well above the legal limit.

3 mm is the recommended time to change anyway.

23,000 miles 18", Michelin Pilot Exalto... need changing really, but still well legal. Mainly want to change them because I'm pretty sure they're starting to suffer, but I'm not driving much and I can't afford it right this second.
I change my driving style accordingly when it's wet anyway.

I'll be swapping them for some Eagle F1s I think (asymmetric) - I don't know if it's the car or the tyres or both, but they're very noisy. I heard F1s were quieter.

Done 24 K and still got a few thousand miles left on my pirelli p zero rosso's.

It gets a fair bit of stick as well as motorway miles.

Pleased with the tyres but they do seem a bit noisy, will probably get another 4 next month unless someone says get some others??

So do you all reckon it’s the bridgestone tyres that don’t last well or that there’s something wrong with the set up on the car.

I have the Bridgstones on mine still from new and have done 22k on them. There still legal but will need changing before christmas. I do a lot of motorway driving tho. Oh and I swapped backs to the front and vice versa at about 14k.

The Michelin Pilots that came on my FR TDI are still going at 36k miles and probably have 1 or 2k left in them. Frankly I'm amazed as although I do a fair few motorway miles I don't spare the horses on the twisty bits in between!

What does extra load and reinforced mean?

A direct replacement for a P-Zero Rosso on my Cupra was about £10 under that price from a local dealer.

I have a feeling that the extra load tyres have super stiff sidewalls for heavier cars i.e. SUVs, so perhaps they'll give a very harsh ride when fitted to a Leon. I could be talking rubbish though...

Just done a quick search and come up with this:

XL Extra Load or Reinforced Tyre - for MPV's, Light Commercials or Large Saloons, are also used for low profile tyres where extra sidewall strength is required

RF Extra Load or Reinforced Tyre - for MPV's, Light Commercials or Large Saloons, are also used for low profile tyres where extra sidewall strength is required

As I say I got a standard P-Zero Rosso as fitted to the Cupra from new fully fitted inc VAT at a local tyre dealer for £117, so you should be able to get a none re-inforced one for about that sort of money.

Incidentially I found online tyre places more expensive than the place who did mine.

They have stiffer sidewalls, but they're not super stiff

Makes little difference to ride comfort, but a noticeable difference to the handling. You'll probably find the tyres you already have will have 'XL' or 'Extra Load' marked on the sidewall somewhere

The TDI's need to have the XL's

Stops the tyre wall rolling over on the front under heavy cornering with the extra weight of the diesel engine.

Not sure about the petrol ones, but XL's are always safer on low profile tyres on performance cars.

Got the Michelin's on my car from new.

Swapped front to back at 5k, now at 15k and the fronts will need changing soon.

The Extra Load tyres are required on the petrol's too, as they were on all Leon MK1's.

I have Dunlop SP Sportsmaxx 225 40ZR 18 92Y on a TDi Sport and have done just over 16,000. The fronts are only just legal and am going to replace with the same for around £120. These have a bit of rim protection as well, though the Misses has still curbed both fronts.

Pirelli P Zero's - I did 29500 miles on them... not very good kerb protector but not a BAD tyre... I've done this mileage in 10 months so needless to say I do lots of miles on the motorway.

I've replaced them with (well LEX have...) Dunlop Sport thingies... (local dealer quoted £95ea but I HAD to go to KwikFit who charged Lex £158ea) grip is good and the Kerb Protector is brilliant!!! Makes them look wider too
