A friend took her out for a test drive the other day round the block (under five minute trip) whilst I stayed behind and chatted to his Dad, showed him paperwork etc. After ten mins I had a call, telling me to come quick as a wheel 'fell off.'

The wheel was ripped straight out - my front wing is ruined and I need a new disc brake. There was no damage to the road and the disc is flat on one place only - all very suspect if I say so myself.

The car's not covered by my insurance, he's not accepting the blame either. Apparently he heard a noise, pulled over, checked the wheel (which later fell off), pulled off again when it just fell off.

Convenient eh?

The bolts have alloy in the thread where it was ripped out, and there's marks on the rim where the bolts have slammed against the alloy itself.

I'm heartbroken - I already took about 50% off asking price, have had to include my alarm etc..now need a new wing, tyre and disc. I can barely afford this, let alone spraying it.

Do you really expect £800 with the faults it has.

You'd be better of breaking it for spares in my opinion

And which faults are these? It's had a full service in December with no running problems anymore, all it had was a lime green bonnet. I spent lots of £££ on the engine chasing red herrings until the CPS was changed.

If it still had problems then I would have sold all my bits and pieces and sold the car for lots less mate.

Edit: To clarify - I will repair the damage but will not sell for less than £800 with my alarm and sound system or include spare parts/paint etc.

scarey considering I bought the same model, with matching panels, 12 months ticket, a nearly new gearbox for less than you're asking.

Not sure why you gave em the money back though? Sold as seen

i reckon your be better off breaking it too.how much is it going to cost to repair? and how much do you expect to get for it?
if you do break it, put me down for the standard airbox.
i would be intrested in a few other spares too

So you're saying an 8v with 108,000 isn't worth £800? With a £300 alarm, 6 months tax - new CPS, sparks, leads, coolant temp sensor, lambda sensor?

New wing is about £35 mate, and whatever the trade price of discs are :)

I am talking to one of the guys here about breaking the car, he pays me a bit for his parts and tax, then shops the tax in when he's moved the car..the 50/50 on all parts sold - I don't have any room for it :( What sort of prices are we looking at as I don't have a clue! He's asked for exhaust and rear axel.

Is it because it's an 8v and not 16v? Saw some cars going for £600+ with 130,000 miles on the clock, totally standard cars too.

Oh dear :(

edit: M0rk - I was just going by pistonhead links!

yeah, i bought mine with fewer miles too (just)

with new brakes, wheel bearings etc

engines are worth £100, gearbox £50, brakes (inc hubs) £100, rear beam £50-£100, wheels £100 depending on tyres

not far off really

id weigh up the costs its not just a wing and a set of discs.
whats it going to cost for fitting and spraying if you cant do it youself.
i wouldnt look on Pistonheads as half of them have been on there for months.look what they go for on ebay.that will give you a true value of what people will pay.
you wont get your money back on new parts fitted or bills for work done etc
cash the tax in,take the alarm out theres £200,engine and box £150,interior £75,wheels £100? doors £30 each, alternator, starter, brakes, windows, axel, subframe etc etc then when its all gone weigh in the shell another £70
its up to you what you do at the end of the day but you wont be far off £800 for sure
oh and the standard airbox for me [B)]

i'd buy a few parts off you aswell if you decide to break it.

Be realistic - £800 is a lot.

Sell off your alarm, that means u only have to sell approx £500 worth of parts to break even on your estimates.

Well bugger, just don't tell my my 2001 Leon with 50,000 on the clock wasn't worth £6000!!! :p

In that case - if I can't sort somewhere to break it is there anyone local with somewhere for it?! :)

Edit: Haha - people are posting quicker than I am! Is LCJay's price list pretty accurate? I have been thinking about saving the alarm for my Leon, I miss being able to lock/unlock the car from a distance greater than 10'

I can repair myself, so no labour fee.

I have a new lambda sensor and crank position sensor if people are interested in those - only used for 2 months tops not even 500miles! Decisions, decisions..

When I put mine up later this year, it'll be pretty much the same state (without the wing issues) but with a funny coloured bonnet. starting @ £250, see what it goes for.

find somewhere you can dry store parts

put up a breaking post in the for sale section.

I'll pm you some cosmetic parts needed for myself (not panels) ;)

Where else have you got it advertised? The problem is that not alot of people know about these cars and then when they see it with a different colour bonnet, they naturally assume that its been damaged (obviously).
Then the fact that they can buy one for £100 or £200 more than your asking for and the fact that its nto been damaged, it looks like a better bargain.

The fact that you've just spent loads on parts doesn't really make that much difference to someone who is paying for the car. Probably only makes them feel better, doesn't value the car more in the buyers eyes.

And lastly, in answer to your question, the 16v is more rare and hence fetches a higher price but i dont think thats the main reason for it not selling.

Break it spares although im not sure how much bits and bobs go for so can't say if you will make £800.

eBay and PistonHeads. The way I saw it was that the car had engine trouble and I forked out to have it fixed. Any other cars without this problem could be due them (equally they could not!) and the customer would have paid x amount for the car, then y to have it repaired within 6 months.

I also justify the green bonnet by saying I spent the dosh on the engine and just ran out of money.

That dont mean nothing mate, the work you did on the engine is general maintanence. The green bonnets because you have not finished repairing it?

Cat D damage. It was serviced the year before I got it - water pump, alternator belt, power steering belt etc..apart from plugs/leads the work done was to fix a problem as opposed to general maintenance - the full service at xmas was half and half ;)

The green bonnet is because I haven't had it sprayed! MOT is..two weeks now but has been up for sale in various forms since Jan.
