In light of the problems I'm currently having with the "owl noise" on my 2.0 TDI,
I'm with you mate. Wish I could have my old engine in my current car...so much more economical and hassle free..

What makes it worse for me is I see my old golf a lot, it now lives on my mums drive :(




I'm not to bothered about the Power side as I think they are quite similar, apart from the wack of torque you got compaired to a more gradual wack from the 170.

Its the MPG that hurts

Yep, I'm with you to mate!

My FR RDI sucks compared to the old Cupra TDi - MPG is about 10 less (on a good day) and even though the clutch doesnt slip, first and second gears are so harsh and lumpy that its a pain in the ass to drive...

And dont even mention the road noise!

Oh - if anyone has the standard Bridgestone tires on it - get shot of them quickly. I have to have all 4 replaced after 12k miles and the rear's were stepped so badly that it sounded as if the wheels bearings were non-existant!

Other than that I love it!!

What kind of MPG are you guys getting? Is it that bad?

I was getting 17mpg on my lunch today if it makes you feel better.:doh:

Getting 25-30 if I take it easy

I'm getting sub 40's which aint that bad in the whole scheme of things but compared the old one its crap!

I have to agree to here, the mpg is just shocking. Even if I drive sensible on the motorway I am really finding it hard to get 40mpg.

For the cost of derv I am starting to think I would be better of with a cupra.

blimey are they really that bad.

One thing though, all this MPG calcs, are you suing the cars computer or Fill up maths. May be best to ignore the computer for one tank and see the true MPG, it may be better than you previously thought.

I would have thought the PD170 would have been a lot better with those more techy piezo injectors...

The economy is one of the main reasons I went for the TFSI in the end, I always wanted a FR 150 with its 50+ mpg and comparing that to the 170 to write ups on here put me off, the gap between the petrol and diesel being so small I went for the petrol.

Wish I'd waited for the Cupra for only a little more though but it is expensive to change now though.

I too had a Golf PD150... Revo'd...

Very nice car (Sat Nav, Recaro's etc etc) but I dont miss it over my FR Tdi.

My overall average on that was 43mpg, which is the same as the Leon.

I think the main reason for not missing it is the handling - in that it diddnt :D

It was a bit quicker (on the straights!) than my standard FR - but that's going to be changed when I decide on a remap.

I struggled to get 40mpg out of my 140. My old 90bhp used to get 48mpg average easy whether grannied (hardly ever) or thrashed. That may sound like I'm comparing chalk and cheese but the every day performance of both was not that different once both were re-mapped. Give me the old 1.9 engine any day. I've also noticed that when the 6 speed box was first introduced on the PD engines the gearing was quite high to keep economy within reason, I notice from the stats in magazines now that the gearing isn't that much different to the petrol on some models - higher revs = higher consumption

My clutch slipped because of the remap.

Even with the map driving sensibly I could still get into the 50's on my 600 weekly commute. Not managed a 46 yet with nearly 20k on the clock. DPF related? Weight?

Let's not start another mpg thread, do a search, lots of figures on that.

My PD150 was similar at 70mph 2k in 6th.
