I reckon I could do it, but as u said I have a house 2 watch dvds in and listen 2 lots of music.

i guess if you spend a lot of time in your car it would be useful, i know when i was younger i practically lived in my car 24/7, but now if im driving my car 9 times out of 10 i prefer to listen to the sweet music from the engine rather than from my stereo! and if im stationary you'll find me outside cleanin or admiring it! im such a geek i know! but not to take anythin away from this guys work its just personal opinions and i can really respect the time and effort he's put in

Cheers guys.

looking very nice mate, whats the psu you got in there for it?

Its a Mini-box M2-ATX, its an "intelligent" car psu. Simply its an ordinary 160W psu but has a startup/shutdown control built in.

This explains it far better than i could:

fantastic job!

looks like you have put quite a few hours into that, how long has it taken & cost to do?

I started planning about 6 months ago. Started buying the parts about 2 months ago. 90% of my time with the project was research. I dread to think of the hours ive put into this! Easily more than 300 hours

£47.07 Motherboard
£70.00 Screen
£5.99 Plastic Epoxy
£5.49 Plastic Primer Filler
£0.00 Sand Paper
£5.49 Matt Black Paint
£43.00 M2-ATX
£0.00 Map Software ( Mappoint 2006)
£25.00 GPS Receiver ( BU-353)
£0.00 256MB RAM
£0.00 CD/DVD-ROM
£1.99 VGA joiner
£0.00 5m VGA Cable
£2.50 5m USB Extension (Touch screen)
£15.05 Boot Tray Organiser
£1.98 3.5mm Jack to Phono
£0.00 Hard Drive Caddy
£24.99 Aux in for Standard Alana Head unit
£0.00 Phono Cables
£29.00 IDE 160GB 7200RPM Hard Drive

Total:

£277.55

The parts with £0.00 means I already had them.

Anyone could do it, i think patience is the key! I do have a slight advantage in that im a computer science student and ive played with computers all my life :)

£278 for bits is impressive and you now have a very unique car!

as said before, it looks very impressive, fair play to you:D

i a gree that there could be a lot of interest, but because of the number of hours labour required would bump up the cost quite a bit IMO:shrug:

he said 90% of his time was research, he knows how to do it now so its just a case of assembly now. people pay thousands for in car entertainment so theres no reason why they wouldnt for this kinda thing. it could be a bit of extra cash in his back pocket or he could probably make a living out this coz i reckon there would be enough demand out there and he obviously has the skills and passion for this kinda thing. i dont know as its not something ive looked for, but i cant imagine there is a lot of companys do this professionally? his biggest problem though, is he has just shown everyone (in excellent step by step detail) how to do it themselves and he has competition in the way of laptops!
