First split the key, to do this get a wide flat bladed screwdriver place it on the join under where the blade sits when closed and twist to prise it apart.

now, remove the round badge to reveal a screw
remove the screw
now prise apart as shown below
as it comes apart do it slowly and keep an eye on the spring.
reassembly is pretty much the reverse except you need to wind the spring so it will flip the key. And you will probably need a new badge too, i used nail varnish to hold it in place.

Remote Control Programming 1997 on. (without VAG-COM)
1. Switch ignition ON and leave the key in ignition.
2. Mechanically lock the vehicle using the drivers door using a second key.
3. Press the remote control unlock button once and the horn will sound once.
4. Wait 6 seconds and press the unlock button to activate the coding procedure. The remote will now be programmed.
NOTE : If you are programming additional remotes the procedure is the same except you press the unlock button 2, 3 or 4 times (with a 1 second interval) depending on how many you have.
5. Switch ignition off.
6. Remove key from ignition and check operation (just in case )
Remote Control Erasing 1997 on. (without VAG-COM)
1. Switch ignition ON and leave the key in ignition.
2. Mechanically lock the vehicle using the drivers door using a second key.
3. Press the remote control unlock button 5 times in 1 second intervals. A short horn will sound.
4. Wait 6 seconds and press the unlock button once to activate memory erase.
5. Switch ignition off, all remotes are now erased.
