Is there a specific angle the MAF should be?

Is there a 'specific' angle the plug on the MAF should be set at?

If so, why?

I have just fitted a cone filter and mine is sitting like this.

We've seen problems with cars that have run the MAF Sensor at different angles... for some reason they are supposed to be fitted between straight up vertical to 120º. I know we've had cars in with them pointing down that didn't run well, turn them round et voila no problems!
More to the point putting a filter directly onto the end of the MAF housing can cause problems with 'turbulance' in the MAF housing which can give varied readings. This all depends on the design of the filter though. Personally I'd mount the filter a little futher away from the MAF housing and more importantly make sure it's fixed in place (but with a damper of some kind if you're fixing it to the body!).

How curious! I wonder If they shed heat when horizontal>upside down.

The position its in now is near enough where it was with the airbox on

It is fitted with a damper and it is fixed to the airbox mounting point.

Here is a direct comparison with before and after.
It looks like I'm a little out so I will move it up a little today.

I'm surprised the angle of the MAF makes a difference, there must be a temperature or pressure difference in the intake. It could be that part of the MAF is dirty, so the amount of airflow over the cleaner part varies depending on the angle.

Usually the distance from the engine/turbo is important as they both generate a pulsing (either by the intake stroke of the pistons or by the turbo itself, which likes to be driven by pulsing from the exhaust stroke). The pulsing can give false MAF readings but this usually settles down the further away from the turbo you get, although too far and you get poor throttle response as the airflow readings aren't quite true.
