how easy is it to remove a steering column so i can replace a totally s*aged ignition as i dont thing it will come off

any help would be a life safer

once the switch gear and crap is out the way its a couple of shear bolts and a UJ bolt and it falls out more or less

oh ok i see so u take the bolts out from the bracket on the adjuster the unbolt it at the bottom i want it complety intact as its a straight swap

u can leave the adjustable section all in one

in the last pic it's bolt #7 (shear bolt) that will be basically a dome so you'll need a centre punch or chisel to spin it round

comes off the top of the column once the switchgear is all out the way iirc

been a while sorry

ive got mine all striped back so its just the ignition so how do you remove section 3 (on top picture)

in the side of the barrel there is a hole to push a pin in against a spring that will release the lock when you use the key

some of them didnt have one so you had to drill into it

if you email me ill send you the diagrams if ya like

mines been screwed to f*ck so i havent an idea if it would release i think i will go with the option of replacing it with the steering column save drilling or grinding anything off

usually only need to remove em when they dont work and then you need em working to remove em - fuzzy logic sadly

i will see how i get on but if i do need your help ill give you a shout

its just annoying because its been screwed the ignition wont snap back from the crank position and it stops the electrics from working

oh you know the spoiler on ur seat is that an f2 because am sure my 8v has the same 1

ignition position and spring loading is determined by the switch in the rear (#5 in 1st pic)
without it the key just spins round and round
knock the lock assy off the top of the column
look under the switch for a small screw
remove/replace switch and refit

front bumper is a comet one (i think) and roof spoiler is F2 (original front self destructed)

it doesnt spin to infinty it just doesnt spring back from the starting position plus the casing around it (the metalic bit) is totally mashed as some thief has butcherd it with a screwdriver if that makes sense

my seat at the mo has a k&n kit on it and i think the exhaust is a magnex oval but am not to sure but it sounds quite mean im thinkng of puting a strut bar new hoses and some coloured Ht leads give it some what i good look

ahh i get ya - sounds pretty mangled then, probably the damage making it stick

if it's been had a go at it's probably best changing the whole assembly anyway

part numbers suggest otherwise but i couldn't tell you the physical difference so worth a visual check

petrol and diesel strangely listed different also ? mmm

well ive got a polo and it looks the same so i am gong to see if it fits if not im guna have to be luck and find a bent seat on the same reg same model lol

let us know for sure, as said you can compare parts VAG wise all day for matching parts for sure but there may be such a small difference that it would be viable to look and check
