A question for all of you TDI experts, my query concerns the pre PD engines. I have for years now, on two Rover 2.o DI engines and this my 110TDI disabled the EGR valve by disconnecting the electrical connection to the solenoid. On all of these engines it has shown a slight immediate improvement and better "smoke test " readings (UK yearly test) and of course no chance of EGR problems, because it remains shut and unused. The reason I have always taken this action is that years ago when Diesel Car Magazine was for real Diesel Divers and dealt with real problems (Now it deals mainly in how to get the best price on your New Audi A8 Diesel - Yeah like we can all afford one of those) An expert back then sugested that the EGR valve is just a sop to tree huggers it doesn,t remove smoke, in fact it makes more, but it does remove some Nox or other component of the exhaust. So Definitive answer please, have I always done right by switching the damn thing off? bearing in mind that since I have done so my "smoke " tests keep getting better, ie: lower readings each year. (My question was mainly triggered by an article in Car Mechanics magazine which said the only effective way to shut it off is to make up a blanking plate. To my mind excessive, if its shut and has no electical trigger for the solenoid it is shut ENDE.)
