Help on headlight unit

Hi
Hoping for some help please....

My friend has a 62 plate mk2 Copa edition and has a broken lense on the near side headlamp unit. This needs sorting to pass the MOT.

He tells me this model has ‘bendy’ lights which I think means the main beam units move with the steering. Because of this he has had some quite expensive quotes for fixing the issue (around £800).

I did a quick search with his registration on Euro Car parts and replacement units are around £200 mark but make no mention of the moving beam function.

Can anyone advise if this is a standard sealed unit which we could transfer the motorised beam elements into or would there be a specific unit that already has these components installed?

Also, a quick search on the forum, etc indicates replacement of the headlight unit is a bumper off job. Is this something that could be tackled by a reasonably competent DIY mechanic at home?

Any advice welcome
Many thanks

The bi-xenon headlights with AFS and DRLs used in the 2011 and newer were around £520 each from Seat last time I checked. I don't think there is anyone who sells them aftermarket. They're made by Valeo but they only list the LHD variants in their aftermarket catalog.

You won't be able to transfer the internals into a different casing due to how different they are. There'll be several mounting positions missing. The best you could probably manage for a bodge job would be to try to replace the plastic lens on the front of the unit. The lenses are the same on all facelift light units I believe.

You could try Listers Seat as they can do discount on most parts, but I wouldn't expect them to be a huge amount cheaper.

Bumper removal is fairly easy. From memory there's 4 screws on the slam panel, a few screws on the bottom of the bumper and a few in each wheel arch. The bumper then pulls sideways out of the clips on the wings and then releases forwards. You can either remove the fog lights beforehand or leave them in and disconnect the wiring as you remove the bumper.

That’s really helpful and I appreciate your advice. If nothing else it shows that the quote he had wasn’t so far of the mark.

I will try Listers to see if I can get a price.

Thanks again
