Stage 1 clutch slip

Hi guys

Had my Cupra Stage 1 done today at DRS.

I noted that if I floor it in 4th, 5th or 6th at circa 3k RPM the revs will jump a little (say 200rpm) then it will start accelerating.

Having a hard time deliberating between wheel spin and clutch slip - note the traction light does not come on.

I guess my question is - is it realistic for wheels to spin (p zeros) at 3k RPM in 6th ?

I know it's cold and wet, and ultimately a dry run will show up the truth, but appreciate any feedback here.

DRS have said try it i the dry, and if it's still an issue they will go with a lower torque map.

Defo clutch. This is a common fault on the Golf R - it’s at the limit as standard because it’s only a Golf GTi clutch but as soon as you go stage anything, the clutch will go. Not sure where you live but VRS Northampton do the Sachs sintered clutch (good for 600 BHP!) for around £900 including vat and fitting. It is supposed to be heavy at first but it gets better. The organic Sachs isn’t worth it as it’s only marginally cheaper than the sintered one. Hope this helps!

Sorry forgot to mention mine is a DSG ? I thought these were good for much higher torque ratings?

did you get a dsg map as well mine is running 344bhp and 506nm torque and no clutch slip. DSG map might do the trick. they increase the clutches clamping pressure .

Ah! DSG is a totally different ball game! You might need a remap on your DSG box then. It’s not uncommon to need it matching to your new map.

Exactly! It is the high torque in low RPM that kills clutches.
A tuner for one of my previous cars told me never to put the foot down under 3000 RPM, since it was not good for the transmission.
The boost is likely there and the engine will deliver the power, but if the transmission can take it is a different story.
Even with an upgrade clutch or clutch remap you are then just transferring the problem to the gearbox.
A tuner car has to be driven with a bit more thought ;)

Valid point. It's just something I've always done in older tuned cars where you had to build to boost from low RPM to get full power.

It's going in for a DSG map, will report back and will avoid going WOT at low RPM.

Unless you're in manual mode, the trans will downshift anyway. As for transmission load, the torque curve is flat from 1800 to 5500, torque is what the transmission is designed to handle, whether it's 3000 or 5000 the load is the same.

Had the DSG done today. Made zero difference to what I deemed to be clutch slip - however also aware that it may just be the tune. The car pulls immediately there's just a slight jump in revs exactly when boost kicks in for say 200 rpm, but it doesn't go back down.

Maybe this is just the nature of going from a NA to a boosted car?

The dsg map does make the shifts faster and smoother especially when using the paddlds so I'm happy with it either way.

Just a wild guess, but...

Have you checked engine mounts? For instance the dogbone mount affects the shifting, and even on a DSG car might affect the hesitation.

I did it before on a manual car and there was a clear difference to shifting.

I have ordered and insert to mitigate the wheel hop. I guess it's a possibility !

Are you reading the revs on the rev counter or OBD2 device?

I was out logging a few month ago, under WOT in 3rd from about 2kish rpm i had a similar thing, the rev counter was jumping up a few hundred, hanging for a split second then continuing, I also thought clutch slip, however once I reviewed the logs there was no trace of it, just one solid line of rpm increase!

I've got a video of it as well, just need to host it somewhere!

It's interesting to watch, the needle just doesn't sweep round as smooth as you think even up towards the redline!

Not all rev counters are dead accurate either. A famous one was one model of Yamaha R6 with a 16,000 redline. The tacho read nearly a 1000 fast.
