What oil to use in my car???

Hey guys I have a Seat Ibiza MK SE sports coupe 2009

Having abit of a worry. As I changed.my oil last year for the 1st time and now worrying I was told the wrong oil grade from the dealer.

If someone with this car could please tell me what grade it is, as I have been back and forth on it???

I recommend:

Castrol EDGE Turbo Diesel 5W-40

You need an oil with vw 502 or vw 504

O no! I'm sure I put in 5w - 30 c3. Yeah I saw the vw502 in he manual but I didn't no what I meant. Because when lolling at oil it's all 5w40 5w40 10w20. So I did not no what to make of vw502

5w30 could be even better, mainly if you do short travels, it depends if your oil has the vw 502 or vw 504 specification or not.

Tell us which oil are you using.

Well it is magnetec castrol start stop 5w 30 c3. How do you know if it has he Vw502 specification?

Whoo I am abit more happy now. My only worry now is I noticed that I had a tiny bit of oil on the plug and then also a single heavy drip hanging from under the oil pan. So I guess I have a a.very very small leak but a leaks a leak right?

Regarding the oil filter you must consider that some oil could be there since the oil change.

Lol yeah. Well I plan to keep an eye on it. Because since not my car don't have it all the time. But I will post some pictures back here next week or so to see how it's getting on

It depends how tight you did the bolt...

It should be 30nm.

If you do it too tight you end up damaging the sump, and if you do to loose you will end up with a leak.

I always use a torque wrench for everyting, but that's me :)

Yeah I didn't use a torque wrench but pretty sure I didn't over tighten. I'll check it next time it's down and keep you posted

Latest spec for VAG oil is VW 504 00 / 507 00. Quantum Longlife III 5w30 bought from well known auction site £22.99 for full 5 litres. You can't go wrong.

[pedantic]The latest spec for VAG oil is 508 00/509 00, but that's not suitable for these engines, so irrelevant. [/pedantic] :whistle::D

It's been covered above, but with a petrol engine you have the choice of 504 00/507 00 for "long life" oil drains (variable servicing, up to 30k km or 24 months) or 502 00/505 00 for fixed interval servicing.

Lots of choices for both.

When making any choice I am often swayed by recommendation and reputation but wherever possible I prefer to trust my own judgement. How does one do this in the case of engine oil?

Excellent question. You will see many recommendations from people who "used XYZ oil and it was great". In reality what they usually mean is they "used XYZ oil and nothing went wrong" which would most likely have happened with any oil they would have used. Unless you fancy dyno testing your engine before an oil change for power, efficiency and emissions, then stripping it, measuring all the components to um levels, rating all parts for cleanliness, then rebuilding it, running it, then repeating it all afterwards you are unlikely to notice quantifiable benefits. Luckily the oil developers do all that for you, then post the results in the form of the specifications and approvals obtained. Some also publish selected results that show differentiated performance in a specific area (for example valvetrain wear, or sludge formation, or whatever) or give a "xx% better" statement. Nobody publishes all their development and testing data, this is proprietary information.

By all means do your research, read the oil suppliers' website and data sheets, get your head around the specifications and approvals but ultimately make sure to pick an oil that carries the spec your car requires (and be sceptical of anything saying "meets the requirements of xxx.xx", which is often a way of saying "we don't hold an approval from this OEM but we think it'll be fine").
