Rear Parking Sensor Issue

I have an intermittent issue with my rear parking sensors. Been working fine for ages and all or a sudden they keep going into error mode. When I have had the car plugged in once before there were no error codes for this issue, which leads me to my first question? would sensor errors report error codes to the ECU as a friend of mine told me that even though the car came as standard with the sensors they would have likely been retro fitted and not by the factory and because of this they don't report to the ECU.

My second question is if that is the case how would I determine which sensor is causing th error? I assume by trial and error.

Thirdly I believe it is a bumper off job to access them and you can't get away with the inner trim that the sensors are housed in being removed?

Is the bumper off an easy job?

I don't own a workshop manual although thinking of buying an ebay one, any good?

Any help on this matter would be a great help!

If they were factory fit then they'll have an ecu that can be checked for fault codes (address 76 park assist).

If they're aftermarket units try putting your ear to them when they're on. Working sensors will give off a ticking sound - dead ones won't.

Thanks for your help. Factory fit so sounds like I should keep checking the error codes then. Will it pin point one sensor or just say there is an overall error?

With VCDS or vas you can interrogate the park assist module and it'll tell you which sensor has flagged a fault and give you the option to read live data from it to narrow down the search.

hiya MJ, My parking sensors are kaput. They bleep once or twice and thats it. I put my ear to each one but there was no ticking noise. They are after market by Seat. I don't fancy taking the bumper off if its the control box behind the offside trim. Any advice would be appreciated. aggie

I am going to purchase a diagnostic tool to try & pin point the issue as discussed in this thread. Mine is intermittent which is a pain but may take off the bumper at the weekend just to help assess the situation.

Find the control box and see if there's an error code flashing on it.

I found the control box but it's just a black electronic box. No display or read out of any description. Am I looking at the wrong thing? Sensors behaving themselves at the moment so diagnostics may not find a fault. Highly annoying intermittent fault.
