If most of what's in the header tank is pink liquid with just the occasional brown flake then it's probably nothing to worry about. If the header tank is full of brown sludge then it's likely the wrong coolant has been added and the whole lot needs flushing out and refilling with G12 coolant.

Doesn't look pink to me I think I'm just going to drain it and then put g12 in it. Is it hard to flush out before I brought it the bloke changed the water pump some I'm wondering weather he just filled it back up with water.

Open drain plug, put hose running in resevoir tank, leave running for a while till running clearish, put drain plug back in,fill with antifreeze/water,job done.

Really appreciate ur help mate. Where is the drain plug on the side of the radiator. How many litres of fluid shall I use and do I just mix 50/50 with normal water

Should be pink, like this

If there's a drain tap it will be on the radiator bottom hose where it joins the radiator. In the absence of a tap, disconnect the bottom hose.

It would be a good idea to disconnect the top hose and flush the radiator too.

Mine isnt that clean lol. I'm gonna do it to igjt hopefully it won't take me that long that g12 stuff has been replaced by halfords g40 it's still pink in colour. Do I mix it with distilled water or normal and how much u think I'm going to need. I'll try clean my bottle too if possible

The Leon doesn't have a drain plug it has a tap at the bottom of the rad right hand side, twist the knob and pull, you may have a problem flushing through though as the thermostat will be shut.

You would have to drain it, refill with water take it for a run until hot, then drain again although the thermostat will close eventually, the only real way round would be to remove the thermostat and flush with the hose pipe then put the thermostat back in.

I have just done it flushed it and refilled it has only taken 3litres of coolant and water combined the heaters in the car get warm and the temp sits at 90 my fans haven't kicked in yet but I don't know if there suppose to I filled it up and it would eventually drop I done this till it stayed at same level but surely it should have took more than 3 litres

OK. You have a TDI 110. Cooling system capacity is about 5 to 6 litres, The tap on the radiator hose only drains the radiator side, to drain the engine you need to detach the lower hose from the oil cooler. Sorry, I should have researched this better - never had to do it myself.

It's difficult to flush the whole system with running water without removing the thermostat, detaching pipes from each other and flushing each section out - the heater matrix will not get flushed by running a hose into the header tank, nor will the oil cooler.

The Halfords G40 spec says it's compliant with VW G12++, so it will be fine. The spec also says that it should be diluted at least 50/50

Cheers muttley so basically I have only done half of it. Where is te thermostat located. I took the top hose of the rad and flushed the rad out. So u know when they done the water obviously u don't have to drain all the system
