Fogs as DRLs

Hey guys,

Thinking about activating this feature in VCDS (I've tested and know it works).

I've had a couple of people pull out in the past few weeks so want something to make me more visible on the road, but haven't got any money for DRLs.

Obviously the fogs are on as DRLs and then when you switch the lights on, they go off.

Just wondered if anyone has activated them or whether you think it would piss other road users off?

Seen a few cars about that just have the fogs on. Seems ok to me as they look like DRL's. Better than having all the lights blazing (even seen people driving with their main beam on during the day).

not sure if it would be legal, perhaps someone with MOT experience on here would know...

I believe Octavia's do it as standard.

@ Redemption - That was my thinking, especially as fogs aren't really that bright in the day light, they certainly weren't when I looked at them. I'm just fed up of people not seeing me!

Considering the number of people who have proper DRL's and get pulled over because the police think they have fog lights on, I think you might be tempting fate with that one.

Personally I think having extra lights on your car won't make the slightest bit of difference to people pulling out on you. I have actually made eye contact with some people at junctions and they STILL pull out on me.

As for annoying other road users, yes I get annoyed with fog lights, especially when I'm on my bike and the light flares up on my visor. I'd actually prefer people to drive with their normal headlights on all the time (AKA Volvo drivers) than drive with the extra bright fog lights on. BMW drivers seem to irritate me most, it's like all the power they don't use on their indicators gets channelled into their fog lights...

(These are just my personal opinions... :) )

I use sidelights loads. Especially on motorway or rain. One of the first to go main beam too.

I've had recently people with DRLs in full wiper and down to 40mph weather on the A1. No rear lights at all then think I'm mental when I flash them.

DRLs (and auto lights) are all very well and good if you know how they work and don't presume they're a substitute.

That's fine but WTF is it with people that put their rear fog light on just because they're on the motorway and it's raining? I had some bloke yesterday with his rear fog light on. Yes it was raining but we were in stop-go traffic and I was about 8 feet behind him. I had red dots in my eyes for about an hour after.

If I'm in the wrong mood these people get full beam xenons till they turn it off

Yes, I've had many situations where I've had to override my auto lights, Every time it's due to rain/spray on a bright day. The sensor thinks it's bright enough to not need lights but the spray makes it hard to see the tail lights of the car in front. There should be a setting where your lights come on if your wipers are on continuously.

Fogs in rain are imbeciles as they look like brake lights and so you ignore them.

The setting should be under "common sense".

I don't understand why DRLs are front only. The tail lights are at least as important as the front. I'd say more, because it's much easier to react to stuff that's going on in front of you than it is if someone's going to crash into your boot.

Hence why I think normal dipped beam lights are a better option, because you then get your tail lights on as well. Motorbikes don't even have the option of switching their lights off anymore, their dipped beam is on permanently.

My mum's new Polo DRLs are always on but use sidelights(I think) but also have rears always on.

I think it tends to be more the LED DRLs (front) that don't bother with the rears.

Bloody fashion statement now anyway. The new Leon is practically sold on it's LEDs. Every pic nearly. The chavs are on it and I would like them but not for the sake of copying everyone else.

I'm going to get some tights on my lights and an EU flag on my number plate...

This!

If I see you with your foglights on during the day, whether you're poor or not, I'll give you some main-beam headlight abuse and maybe even cross the white line with all my front lights on until you turn them off or you're forced to stop. At which point, depending on how big/intimidating you are, I might even get out of the car and come show you where the foglight switch is in your own car.
