Trs tow strap, quick how to...

rite then, a fair few have posted about the fitment of the trs strap to the leon, how to fit, where to fix it, what to use to make a bracket...

the few of you who have done it propperly (in that i mean so it can be used) have explained, i have followed this up by doing it...

so...

tools - hacksaw, drill, grips, spanner to fit the nut, a 6.8mm bit and matching tap to fit a M8 bolt
material - 8M bolt, washer and spring washer (a must have so it wont work its way off!!)

first up get a spare screw in towing eye (or use yours if you wanted)
tow.jpg

cut the the towing eye more or less in half, iv only cut the loop off mine and its a little long really

take a drill to the middle, drill and then tap the thread
028.jpg

get a bolt to fit the thread, a washer and also a spring washer to save it shaking about and falling off, you can use lock tight or somthing if you wish.
029.jpg

put it all together make sure it all fits etc BUT dont do the nut up all the way as you will need to put the towing eye on the car first using a set of grips make sure its nice and tight THEN keeping it in the grips do the nut up for the strap, again nice and tight, remember the towing eye has a backwards thred so doing the nut up without having the grips on the "bracket" will prob undo the thread and you will be playing a silly game of push me pull you lol

next job to do is the bumper grill, simply cut a little bit away for the strap to poke through

job done, sit back and enjoy as now your car is poking its toung out at all the passers by :p lol

CAN I ASK IF YOU HAVE FITTED THE STRAP TO A NON LCR BUMPR PLZ PLZ PLZ SEND ME A PIC, I WOULD LIKE PICS OF ALL 3 BUMPERS WITH THE STRAP FITTED ON THIS TOP THREAD!!!

Have you checked the UTS of your bolt? 8.8? Or did you go for a high tensile 12.9?
Just remember the weight this thing will be loaded with when used

Cant remember the UTS of bolts from my college days but just something to think about
Some high tensile bolts take ridiculous load. Could hang that 4 ton M/C off 1 bolt

So long as is screwed into some fooking strong mettle or surely 4 ton would strip the threads out the hole  lol

Just for reference 6.8mm is drill size for M8
Pyro i think you under estimate the strength of threads, but your not exactly going to try hanging stuff off sheet ally
Also in the above guide a spring washer or loctite is heavily recommended as it will vibrate loose otherwise

i was right then about the tapping drill size :)
i'll defo be using a spring washer and/or loctite threadlocker

Nothing like an apprenticeship to turn you into a waking zeus book
End up knowing spanner/ allen key and tapping drill sizes, etc but VAG cars dont always follow this, M10 bolt is 17mm spanner but sometimes heads are 16/18mm, strange

nahh a fair few of them would be used but he said they are the strongest bolts they had at work that will fit any ways i hope not to have to use it ever...
