they don't come on again when you unlock the car (unlike my mate's new golf)

You can use the menu above to set them to stay on when locking the car and to stay on when you unlock the car! (Just like the cr@ppy golf)

I tried that and didnt get the headlamps to come on when unlocking the car, perhaps there was an option i didnt buy? I do have the large bluetooth screen though.

Remember they will ONLY come on if it is dark... the menu asks how long you will want to keep them on in seconds for either lock or unlock. If all else fails go to your stealer and let them sort it out

So if I dont switch the lights off and lock the car the lights will go of on their own? An the length of them staying on can be changed via the MFD?

it works only with "auto light", because it requieres light sensor which recognize if there is dark or not. Without sensor, you cant get coming home function as a standard option (lights will not coming on after you unlock the car). But you can do changes in central eletronic using VAGcom and enable coming home function, but the lights will always come on, not depend on darkness.

I have been confused by the ATA for a while - I read on a Golf forum that it was to make the alarm blip when you locked / unlocked but it doesn't seem to do that, either...

I read on a Golf forum that you cant change this due to regulations in showing both units for speed.

Can you get the MFD to show your speed on Pre-Facelift models? ie mine is a 58 FR with Bluetooth?

there is a lot of features that are on the mfd but have no effect when changed.

This is because the stealers have to do it via vag com and charge you .

Things like the alarm chirp and all doors unlocking not just drivers door.
