im planning on selling my vRS and going the two car route. one family diesel and one stripped out hatch for trackdays.

So far i have narrowed my choices down to a clio 172, pug 205GTI, pug 106GTI.

however i noticed the leon cupra R seem to go for not that much cash nowadays.

when i biuy this second car, it will be stripped out and fully setr up for track work(still orad legal though).

few questions foir any guys who have done this before:

1- what weight is the std LCR, and what weight are they when stripped down of weight.

2- what power(realistic ) do the LCRs remap to with decat exhaust, FMIC, intake and stage 2 remap. id be keen to seewhat Hp/ton i could get out of it.

3- are things like persex windows, rol cages readily available for the leon and how are they priced.

4-are tere any good track day leon build threads o here??

cheers guys

The OEM spec LCR come in at 1,356 Kgs. I'm stripping out my LCR just now and hope to get it down to 1,200 Kgs before fitting a cage.

2- what power(realistic ) do the LCRs remap to with decat exhaust, FMIC, intake and stage 2 remap. id be keen to seewhat Hp/ton i could get out of it.

The OEM power to weight is 165 BHP/tonne, even just getting the running weight down to 1,200 Kgs you instantly put this up to 188 BHP/Tonne. If you want peak figures you will get 280 BHP and 300 ft-lbs putting your power to weight up to 233 BHP/Tonne but this will be very difficult to get the power down without a good differential.
3- are things like persex windows, rol cages readily available for the leon and how are they priced.

Perspex windows £400 inc VAT and delivery, Roll cage £1,500 fitted for full cage with triangulation to the fron turrets

4-are tere any good track day leon build threads o here??

I have one going just now and am in the earlish stages of bodying/stripping this.

The LCR is a very good starting place in many ways but rubbish in others.
Depends on what you want to spend and what you want out of it

thanks very much willie.

im not so much after peak power figures to be honest. Id rather sacrifice the peak power and get a nice long plateau of power and torque accross the rev range.

When i decide on a car, it wil have a diff anyway, so putting it down shouldnt be hard. Ive had my TFSI at stage 2+ for ages anyway, so im ised to high power FWD traction now anyway.

few more questions then mate:whistle:

1-brakes.
i believe the LCR come with 4 pots as standard is that right. Now id presume they are not the best for repeated track sessions in a std car, but do you think thye would be up to the job for a car that could be potentially 200Kgs lighter than Oem

2-Weight Saving.
What extremes have you gone to with this. Im thinking when i get a car to prep, ill be removing all sound proofing, door cards, carpets, roof lining, seats, glass windows, drilling and swagging of any non structural metal etc etc.

3-do you have a buid thread??/

cheers pal

l

if you are having perspex windows why not remove the winder mechs/locks etc too and use sliders ?

dash and heater assy will be a decent weight too and you can always add a basic blower for misting up

have seen door's fully skinned too before but removing all the safety bar's etc isn't ideal if no cage going in mind.

when it comes to reduucing weight on track car's you want to bin what you don't 'need' and drill holes in anything that isn't needed for strength

The OEM brakes with 330mm 2 piece discs and DS2500 pads with RBF600 fluid are man enough for the job. Lots of people also rear ending me under braking on last track day. Next one I'll have new fluid, braided lines and new caliper

Look at my thread, have now ordered polycarb windows so door skins, lecci windows the lot is going. Sounds proofing, fire proof matting, pillar plastics THE LOT!!

I've been up against MI16 205 GTI's caged and light as ####, TBH not impressed with them. No doubt good fun on the corners but on the straights no match for my 210 BHP OEM mapped LCR.

Hope this helps

Thought you might jump on this one Willie!!

LCR is a great car for the track. - if you like FWD that is. Plenty of haters from the RWD camp though!
You knows it.

There are a few of us getting into the track lark, most still using the car day to day too.
This creates a compromise but not too big a one that spoils your fun too much on the track

much appreciated willy, ill have a look through your thread with interest.

ive been looking into something more potent for a while. my car is a bit more jack of all trades master of none, and wanted something abit more no holds barred.

initiallyi test drove an impreza STI whichi loved, but the missus said she has never felt so embarrassed in a car before. so that one went out the window. but a guy in work with a clio 182 cup, that has been stripped out took me for s spin, and i was shocked at how nimble it was in comparison.

hence the new plan of action.

reason im interested in the 205GTI is from what i have read they are extremely cheap to get spare parts and consumables for, and there is a welth of track biased kkit on the market for not very much money, meaning less running costs and more track days which is the ultimate aim.
plus chec this vid out. this is a stripped out 205GTI with the 306gti6 (160Hp/900Kg---) engine transplant. look how he is reeling in the evos and all sorts.

to be honest im a RWD virgin. i dont doubt they are great to drive, but i have alot of experience of FWD hatches on track so ill stick with what i know.

so you think that the LCR will only drop around 150Kg with all the stuff taken out. Id have thought that you could get a lot more than that out. considering a std weight of1350kg that 1150kg stripped out would be pretty achievable

Perhaps with everything stripped out you might get down to 1,150 Kgs.

I'll be finding out soon.

The good points about the LCR in tuneability. I don't know much about 205 GTI's and Clios but the mear fact the LCR is a turbo'd car from starters makes it easy to do.
A stripped out LCR with 320 BHP would rip the arse out of most things. With a diff, good suspension and tyres it's gonna be alot of fun and run all day and all night without any engine internal mods.
Would a Clio/205 with the same power be more fun?
Would it be cheap and reliable at this tune level??
Also when you get tired of the LCR engine transplant into a Exige:)

I dont think you would have any problems with stripping a leon and using it every day
i do this aswell and have done a few track days. and many more to come.
the plan for my car will to take it off the road and get another car. so i will be totally stripped out and shed as much weight out the car as poss.

what about an Ibiza cupra. although i have money to do this, i dont want to waste it when i could get better value for money.

the only engine mods i would do are the likes of exhaust, intake, remap, intercooler fuel pump etc.

so taking into account

1-tuning potential of the lCR and ibiza cupra,
2-weight of the car once stripped,
3-cost and availability of track spec parts etcd
4-cost of the car to begin with.

how would you say they fare together

not to sure on the base power of an ibiza or its tuning potential but i cant see it being that baf

I'd say for a purer track car go for the Ibiza Cupra R.
If you could fit a KO3s in there you could potentially have 250BHP (remapped) and weight of 1tonne = 250 BHP/tonne which is nice.

With 2 piece discs and Brembo calipers (standard fit), diff, better suspension, uprated engine mounts good tyres (OEM alloys are light anyway) you would have a capable car.
