Personally i'm not sure if it's really that bad to mix oils, providing they are the same weight you should be ok.

I do recall on my old motor, the FR at first service they put semi-syn in precisely for the reason you sate Poverty to bed it in.

As for 20K onwards I can not see any harm in using fully synthetic.

If in doubt about mixing i'd just do an oil and filter change personally for your own piece of mind.

Having said that the garage put castrol slx longlife 3 5W-30 in my K1 for 10k service. This however seems to be replaced by the Castrol Edge?

At 16K now so probably due a top-up myself

my service book says to use vw502.00 - 505.00

Oops. Its this stuff they put in http://www.thetradepartsspecialists...uct/Quantum Synta Gold Product Data Sheet.pdf

Which is 5-40. I still use the 5-30 edge for top ups but I've never really had to top it up as I don't do alot of miles between services and it doesn't seem to use much oil.

If you look below from a golf forum it has been replaced with Quantum Platinum

Quantum Platinum, 5w40, VW 502.00/505.00/505.01, ACEA: A3/B3/B4/C3, API SL/CF, Ford WSS M2C917A (this replaces Synta Gold and PD Diesel); (fully synthetic)

* ZGB 115 QLB 005 10 - 1 lit
* ZGB 115 QLB 005 11 - 5 lit
* ZGB 115 QLB 005 12 - 20 lit
* ZGB 115 QLB 005 13 - 208 lit
