leon FR rear diffuser

hi, was wondering if anyone has had the rear diffuser on their mk2 leon FR sprayed / vinyled gloss black, thinking of getting this done myself but cannot find any good pictures of it to see if it looks good or not, obviously i am changing the rest of the greyish plastic stuff on my car to gloss black aswell to match. feel free to leave ur opinions and pics

The problem wil be getting the paint to saty on and not start to crack as the rear diffuser is not designed to be painted and difficult for the paint to key, any flexing and the paint will crack. Similar issues when people tried to paint the lower rear bumper on a Golf MKV the bodyshop would not gurantee the work.

Have you thought about appling a carbon fibre viynl or gloss black May end up looking better and working out cheaper. A Carbon fibre rear diffuser like they do for the 1 Series M Sport would look nice!!

yea think the gloss black vinyl will work out cheaper, jus didnt really know what would be the better option but since u say there are cracking issues then maybe better going with the vinyl option in the end! does vinyl look the same as paint or can u tell the difference straight away? does paint look better?

Depends on the quality of the Viynl and who how well the viynl has been applied.

If a proper bodyshop paints it then it will be ok and not crack.
Desent shops use a plasticisor in the paint which make it flexible which is what is used when painting bumpers/ spoilers, etc. If this isn't used then as soon as there is any flex in the panel then the paint would crack and come off in chunks

The issue is the paint keying to a plastic bumper not designed to be painted ie not having a smooth finish but very slightly mottled so peeling off maybe a better description as the paint comes away from the palstic. Tat is what I was told by a bodyshop in the dark days after Uni being a car salesman

There is a high build primer which is used for parts such as this, the primer is thicker than normal so can fill the grooves/ dimples giving a smooth finish. When used with the plastisicor it won't peel off

I've had several cars colour coded (inc mk5 golf gti rear lower bumper) and never had an issue.

Back street b/shops will paint a plastic part as they would a non flexible metal panel without the plastisicors and this will chip/ peel

Speaking of which, can anybody recommend a good paint shop in the derby/chesterfield areas?

You can get it covered in gloss black vinyl but you will need to ask for cast vinyl such as Fasson 900 series, should cost you around £30

ok thanks, glad to see that i have 2 options, can either get it painted or vinyled. taking my car to a guy this week about painting my roof n some other parts of the car so will see what he would charge for the rear diffuser aswell, but if hes too dear then i will get the work done in vinyl. thanks for the help people
