Mot time is upon me and i worry its gonna fail on rear tyres being too low on tread, i take it i could swap to steel wheels and put it through on them, see im gonna buy tyres but this next month packs everythin into it, MOT, Insurance renewal, and the tyres i wanted to buy, but money it the issue, i have the money for the insurance but not enough to buy tyres, so putting things into Priority MOT and insurancwe come first, so u reckon i should chance the wheels as they are or swap to steelies and play it safe?, what else should i watch for in my MOT? what height should my beams be set at cause im also worriesd about those, i seem to blind cars in front so much that i have seen 3-4 pull in to let me past, oooops......

I just use a 20 pence piece. If the little band goes fully into the middle groove then they are legal.
the tyre bloke probally looked at the wear bar on the tyre to check if there legal when i was a mechanic i could look at a tyre and tell if its legal or not without checking the limit with any tools as when your in the trade its a skill you pick up i guess.
it sticks with you as when i walk past an illegal tyre i can spot it so be safe and put your steels on for the mot.
dont worry about your lights as an mot tester will put an advisory on your mot check form and rectify the problem without failing the car as its an easy two minute job for a tester.
give all your bulbs a check over check your exhaust hasnt got any blows thats about all you can check really without the skills.

Many tyres will have tread depth indicator blocks which will show you when you are down to 1.6mm. If these blocks are level with the depth of the tread then you need to replace your tyres.
If your tyre has no indicator blocks, I would recommend using a 10p piece to check the depth, if the tread covers the ring of dots, then your tyres are legal.
Just place the coin in the tread from the outside edge all the way across to the inside.
Also I always fling a bit of Redex in the tank to help with the emissions part of the test.

good little trick with the 10p, think i will put on the steelies and ssave myself a possible £35 or more, get to fell the speed of the 1.2 without heavy alloys again!!!!haha, will i get done with my number plates cause they are shorter? still legal spacing so i think they would be ok
you can have a shorter plate as long as the spacing is correct so would not worry about that.
things to check also: brake pads (would fail if pad has less than 5p thickness), brake disks (if they are worped in any way they will fail), anything else would be a little more difficult to assess like play in your wheels and suspension etc. lights- back and front - sidelights/headlights/high beam/indicators, back fog. horn, seatbelts, wipers. this covers most of the upset of the car. good luck scott

you can give your car in for an MOT 28 days before it expires so means you have almost a 13 month MOT...when is it due??also means they could pass your tyres and give you an advisory for them, just change them at a later date, but keep monitoring them to ensure ur not illegal
so it failed yesterday and passed today......rear tyres, led sidelights, and he claims the xenons were 2 different colour and also neede aligned, got aligned yesterday after i changed the bulb and put in standard sidelights, they forgot to chage me for the realignment lol. and put steelies on this mornin and passed, was a bit kecktic but got there. anyways pics of my car on steelies here haha
