Well 2000 miles on and that pipe is still fine, however there was a loud pop today pulling away from some lights followed by a whistling so either something else is popped off or the turbo is toast.

No smoke this time though.

Got recovered home so the car has actually only run for <2mins with this noise so hopefully nothing else is damaged...

Check out a vid showing the noise at idle and very slightly over here:

it doesn't look like anyone has mentioned this, i replaced the stupid metal clips on the plastic intercooler pipe which runs alongside the fuel filter housing, this cured my black smoke problem, the old clips stretch and lose tension, new ones are tight and harder to get on.

Joy!

No had chance to look at it today but from what I have read and seen now it has all the signs of turbo failure, if only it was under warranty like yours CJFR. Impressive that my brake discs last longer than my turbo, I thought 42k miles was nothing for a TDi if looked after but apparently thats not the case! Should have kept my leon cupra and not worried about the fuel cost! lol

Thought I best post an update...

It was the turbo, the inlet turbine was no longer attached to the shaft! Got it hauled into a Seat dealer after speaking to customer services so that they could see if there would be a good will contribution.

After a week or so had a call to say they would cover the cost of the parts if I was willing to pay the labour, not bad as the car was 4.5 years old!

They replaced the turbo, all gaskets and oil lines and all the hoses going too and from the intercooler.

The turbo came in at just over £1100 and the hoses around £100 each, not cheap. They also infomed me that the invoice had been made out so that I paid £50 towards the parts and they covered £50 towards the labour. This ensures I get a 2 year warranty on the parts and labour which put my mind at rest.

Couldn't really fault the dealer (Kings in Southampton) or the guys at customer services, regular calls to keep me updated on progress whilst waiting for the part to come in and after I had the car back to make sure I was happy!

Also couldn't fault Green Flag who trailered the car home from where it broke down and then on another day back to the dealer. They arrived within 20 mins on both occasions!

Mad that you've just posted back because mine blew again on Friday 13th!! 2 years 5 months after my first turbo was replaced by Seat under warranty. I have told SEAT there was oil leaking from the pipes after they replaced it and when rolling roaded the car was well underpowered so they sent off a good will request....which was rejected, been told it'll cost £1,300 to fix and i take it they'll just replace the turbo and not the leaky pipes at that price.
I've now got an expensive garden ornament sitting in the drive which i'll not be getting fixed until the new year because of xmas.:cry::cry:
Did you have full service history with your dealer? Got told thats why my good will request was rejected, my car is regularly serviced using seat parts, just not by them.

Edit** thought i'd add the 1st turbo was repalced at 25,500 miles and my car only has 38,400 miles on it now and the 2nd has blown.
