Owen developments IHI

Thanks Wilko,

So just to clarify, are you saying you've had several IHI's go bang on you?

I seem to remember that you lost a rod when you had little over 300bhp didn't you? That's one of the reasons I'm so concerned with mine supposedly pushing 360bhp.

I look forward to hearing how you get on with the new turbo.

Thanks
Ben

Yes. All bearing failures for varying reasons. Two from being overworked, and two from insufficient oil feed (spanner monkey incompetence.)
Rod went at 320-330hp, but it's had lots of abuse over the years and was one of the weaker ones. I was running the vf34 flat out to make that.

Nastey!

So, does anyone have details of the different Owen turbo spec options?

I can't find the details on their site.

I think the smallest one is good for 400bhp and the biggest (That will fit an Ibiza) is what 475bhp? Is there anything inbetween?

Thanks

On my polo I have had a IHI VF 34 the Owens 475 bhp hybrid and Now I have a owens hybrid gt3076.

My car made 337 bhp on the IHI( 1.5 bar) and was on full boost just after 3k revs

Then the engine was took to a 1.9 and had ported head and water / methanol injection added. It made 430 bhp at 1.65 bar twice blew the big ends so the map was not not finished. After that I started doing the mapping myself on the road which I found more benificial.
Full boost by 4k rpm

Then I added the large port SEM and changed location of my chargecooler to make the boost run much shorter and bought the hybrid 3076.

I now have a cou[ple of maps for road and racing with the most extreme runing 1.85 bar. I have had it on the rollers few about half an hour to get the map checked and I havent got a print out to prove but it now makes well over 500 bhp.
This turbo is on full boost by 4.5k rpm

how on earth are you managing to hit full boost by 4500rpm? mines a big owens turbo .82 hotside with a 52lb/min wheel.is yours a proper garrett gt3076r as in garrett flanged?mine makes 1 bar at 4k and 2 bar by 5.5k.maybe you need to map mine then:think:would love some more info on your turbo, engine spec etc:D

My turbo is the hybrid 3076 with .82 hotside on a IHI flange. Not sure if standalone helps but I do have a very short run from the turbo to chargecooler and then to the throttle body which helps but the main thing is the boost controller. Not sure if all have this function but with the turbosmart one you can tell it when the wastegate is to start to open to regulate the pressure.

When I started playing around with this figure it spools up much quicker as it keeps the wastegate closed longer and builds the presuure quicker. There is a fine line though about getting it to stop closed till the last moment and still regulating the pressure and getting a big over shoot in pressure

Wow, that Polo sounds awesome.

0-60 in 3.2? Is it one of the Polos with a 4wd conversion?

Caney, what turbo are you running to get 425bhp? Thats pretty much exactly the sort of power I'd like to aim for.... not sure if the smaller Owen turbo can produce that?

Thanks
Ben

NO the polo is mid engined and RWD.

I would say that the smallest one of the owen developments turbo wouldn't be able produce 425 bhp as they are only rated for 400 bhp

Nice. I bet that's a fun drive?

The Owen Developments website (And Jabbas) say that the turbo is designed for 400+bhp.... so I was just wondering how much the plus bit meant.

So is the next turbo in the range the 475bhp version, or is there something in between?

Thanks
Ben

also remember these turbos are tried and tested on 2ltr subarus and evos which seem to make more power due to better head design etc.i think the biggest 475bhp+ will make a more realistic 450bhp on our cars.Ben go for the mid sized turbo which should get you 410/420bhp.Mines still being tweaked at MRC at the moment but it's flowing 364g/s at 2.1bar peak holding 1.8bar to redline so it's roughly 450bhp to give you an idea of power.

scubaru having a better head design than a 20v? your kidding right?

kevins leon in combe saloons is running owens largest one, on a JS manifold, modified to make it external gated and is pushing t'wards 550+bhp on Owens dyno (runs motec ecu)

As i think i've stated before the larger owens hybrid makes 420-440bhp on a 2l scooby at 1.8-2bar around 335-350atw ,that was on motec .

kevins leon is runing >500bhp on an owens unit on owens rollers and his motec.. modified JS mani to make it external gated may be making the difference to the extra flow
