Leon FR - Preferred Diesel

Hello all,

I understand Threads come up quite frequently on different fuels.

I'd like to hear from those with the Diesel FR, and their thoughts on which Diesels bring out the best in these cars - performance mainly ;) (but also considering economy).

I have had my FR for a short time and recently filled up with BP Ultimate??
Is there a requirement to only fill up with the higher RON fuels, or?

Any other tips on the FR would be very much appreciated. :)
- ie: Is it good practice to idle for a short while before switching off when parking up (to help prolong the life of the Turbo).

Thankyou in advance. :)

I think so long as you've been driving slowly just before parking up and don't blip the revs as you're stopping for some reason, there's no need to idle before switching off.

Dunno about which diesel's best but I found my Golf TDI ran very well on the 'Excellium Diesel' from Total. Also Shell V-Power, although for some reason my Golf seemed to get less mileage on V-Power diesel than normal Shell derv... bit counter-intuitive?

v-power but that gave me less mileage
bp ultimate did the same and it felt as if there were flat spots
tesco - **** me... was like driving about with a chimney attached to the back of my car for a week  clouds of black smoke out it all the time.

the one which seems to work with my 2.0 140 tdi is the normal shell stuff..

have only put £20 quid in so far, and that was just normal tesco derv. no smoke etc. Seems grand to me. will test with BP etc

With my diesels when I start the car, I always idle for 10 secs and when I stop I do the same.. Just a habit I've gotten into!

I tend to use Shell normal diesel all the time. I started using V-Power diesel but I noticed the DPF regen cycle started to kick in quite often. Switched back to standard and its back to normal!

Don't mention BP Ultimate. Put 20 quids worth in at Leigh Delamare services on Sun avo, and the DPF had got into limp mode by the time I'd reached Newport! DPF light came on within 10mins of leaving the pumps....:wtf:

Normal Shell for me, sometimes Tesco or Morrisons.

Tried Shell V-Power last time and it seemed the same as any other?

Hi everyone,

Thankyou for all your feedback so far - very useful - much appreciated !! :)
The concencus does indicate the FR drives nicely on 'normal' Shell, with most using it.

Gregster - Dare I say this but part of the reason I started this Thread WAS because I put in a full tank of BP Ultimate just over a week ago, and the car definately appear more sluggish and not as 'pokey', with less rapid acceleration, than when I first got the car.

So I will next try a full tank of normal Shell, and see how I get on... ;)

In front of a PC....
Normal Esso or Shell for me with a couple of doses of Millers DS4.
I would give it several tanks before changing over to another brand as it takes 2 or 3 tanks for things to take effect.

Bog standard diesel + millers here too, never had DPF problems and get decent MPG too so would recommend it to anyone. Never tried so called premium diesels but from what I have read they give little more for your £'s...

Probably a stupid question. But what does millers do. is it an octane booster or addative of some kind. what sort of money is it and how long does it last for

I've never used any additives just standard derv from morrisons or tesco and car seems perfectly fine with it.But I'm just one of these boring standard cars that gets a bit of tweaking i.e pipercross panel filter, gloss black grille, seat cupra.net stickers etc... Want remap sometime though.
Millers is a diesel additive.Boosts the fuel and keeps engine injectors clean also improves mpg increases power reduces emissions increases cetane by up to 4 numbers whatever that is.
Wow the power of GOOGLE methinks.
May give millers a try if the cars don't become dependant on it.
Don't like the idea of having to use it all the time at around 6 or 8 quid a pop for about 10 tanks full but if it gives better mpg maybe its worth the small cost.

Has been a while so thought I'd provide an update....
Since switching to the 'normal' Shell Diesel (as recommended by most here) my FR really flies !! :D

The difference in performance is quite noticeable! I started filling the car with BP Ultimate, however the car soon felt sluggish and lacked the performance I first experienced when buying my FR (3 weeks ago).

Made no sense, as I used to always pay the extra for the 'premium' fuels, believing it was the best for the engine and better performance - now proved wrong!

This is the first recent fill up wth the Shell, so will take a few more to cycle the tank completely, but VERY pleased so far! :) Will take a trip to Halfords and take a look at the Millers, to see if it would be beneficial too.

Thankyou all for your feedback above, much appreciated.

Normal Shell worked better with my Fr TDI too.It must be a reason for the V power diesel to be in second place and i guess it has something to do with the damned Dpf....Anyone knows something more specific?

Cheers guys for your additional replies - I did actually think about this Thread while driving into work this morning. :)
Still on the standard Shell Diesel and it's great - as other converts are also finding! ;)

Not yet got round to looking at the Millers additives though!? The Label on the inside of the fuel cap simply states "DIESEL". Wonder if that is a specific statement on what fuel to use (compared to "PREMIUM DIESEL"), or just a generic reminder not to fill up with petrol!

As highlighted by LordElric above, perhaps on the FR TDi the fuel of choice is being affected by the presence of the DPF? If you later go on to Remap your FR, I wonder what the Tuners would then recommend, as the fuelling of the car is obviously changed as part of the Remap! Might find this out, as I do plan a Remap at some point in the future.
